The Bill Burley MidSummer Championship
5 miles - Squire Road July 8, 2006 8:30 am. sunny and pleasant, 75 degrees |
|
There
were fireworks at the Bill Burley MidSummer Championship as David Hunt made a
group of talented runners chase him over one of the toughest five-mile courses
in the area. Jeff Sheldon finished 20 seconds back, and Ken Merrick
another 30 seconds back.
Among the women, Shepaug High School's talented Christina Wells was running her first Roxbury race of the season. She started a little ahead of last week's winner Pam Quist and two-time winner Eunice Bussom and gradually pulled away. At the end she was 45 seconds ahead of Eunice and about 1:15 ahead of Pam. Quite a race.
Hall of Fame
The post-race festivities, besides presenting awards to the year's Champions, featured the first inductees into the Roxbury Road Race Hall of Fame. The honorees were:
Bill and Sue Burley - race founders
Larry and Arlene Kershnar - race directors and generous supporters
Jay Kronfeld - race director
Marty Sauer - retired Brookfield High School coach and mathematics teacher, long-time supporter
Jim High - first winner of the Prestigious
Roxbury Points competition in 1983
John Kiley - generous supporter of the races - "t-shirt man"
Dave Harvey - two time winner of the Points competition. Long time supporter
Ed Sandifer - WebGuy, sometime Points competition winner
Leadville Marathon
Think a Marathon is a tough race? Try it at 13,000 feet, across the beautiful and glorious Mosquito Pass. That's what Carl Hunt and Walt Schuttler did last week. The course was so tough that both took over 7 hours, and both say it was the most difficult thing they have ever done.
They also say it was the most beautiful scenery they have ever seen, and their enthusiasm for the experience gives you goose bumps. Congratulations Carl and Walt.
Abe to Africa
We won't have Mike Abraha
m to kick around for
a while. The New Milford High School social studies teacher teaches world
cultures so well because he's been so many of the places he teaches about.
He's been to China several times, and now he's off to Africa for about a
month. Enjoy the trip, Abe, and be careful.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind curves.) Also, it is much safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's sometimes more fun if you win. Set goals you can realistically achieve.
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top, we have Summer Champion Christina Wells, running her first Roxbury of the season.
Next we have Eunice Bussom, two time winner of the race this year, and second place woman this week.
Then we have the crowd at the starting line applauding Walt Schuttler and Carl Hunt for their extraordinary run at the Leadville Marathon.
Below Walt and Carl we have Pam Quist approaching the finish line this week, looking fast and refreshed.
That one is followed by a shot of Sameh
Hassan ignoring the stop sign.
Then we have three three Demings, Chris, his brother Larry, and Larry's daughter Amanda.
Along the side of the results we have a couple of people trying to straighten the posts in the parking lot. Next is a shot of two Mark's one's a LoSacco and the other's a Zerbe.
Third in that column are the three Neils ladies, Lili, April and Katie.
Way at the bottom, notice the Dragon is back.
