2006 Roxbury Race #24

6.4 miles - Falls Road

First Wins for McEwen and Lee

Reid McEwen, former track and cross country star for New Milford ran his first Roxbury race of the season, and went home a winner.  For Terri Lee, it wasn't her first race of the season.  It was her eighth, but it was her first win, so both winners were first-time winners.

People were tired this week.  The great heat wave that brought 100 degree temperatures to much of the area is finally over, but it baked the bounce out of our legs, so when we ran a bit longer, 6.4 miles, we all got tired on the hills at the end and had to slow down.

Next week we get it a bit shorter.

People

The Fossil is back from two and a half weeks in California.  He was working at a math camp for "profoundly gifted" middle school students at the University of Santa Cruz, with a view of the Pacific Ocean outside his window.  He ran his legs off, over 115 miles in the 16 days he was there, and came back feeling really tired.  Still, he finished 7th, his highest finish of the season.

Web Guy Jr, and his pal "Botzi" are off to Amsterdam for a few days of flatlander training.  Ever hear of the "Dutch Alps"?  There's a reason you haven't.  Rumor is that they have to go to meetings while they're there, but we know it's all about the running.

Welcome to Roxbury and the Roxbury Races to Cathy Racz.  When we run the Jeep Trail course, we go past her house.

Safety

Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.

It is safest if we face traffic as much as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind curves.)  Also, it is much safer if we are all  on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

  3. It's sometimes more fun if you win.  Set goals you can realistically achieve.

Be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.

This week's pictures

Up top, we have the winner from a couple of weeks ago, Eunice Bussom.

Then we have the crowd at the starting line applauding Walt Schuttler and Carl Hunt for their extraordinary run at the Leadville Marathon.

Then we have three three Demings, Chris, his brother Larry, and Larry's daughter Amanda.  Those that hung around after the race this week were treated to an impromptu concert by Larry.  He plays quite a fiddle.

Along the side of the results we have a couple of people trying to straighten the posts in the parking lot.  Next is a shot of two Mark's one's a LoSacco and the other's a Zerbe.

Third in that column are the three Neils ladies, Lili, April and Katie.

Way at the bottom, notice the Dragon is back.  There are sea slugs in Santa Cruz, but no dragons.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
