4.5 miles - Up Chalybes - Down Hemlock August 12, 2006 8:30 am. mid 50's? Beautiful! |

Jeff Sheldon and Pam Quist are no strangers to the winner's circle this year at Roxbury. Going into today's race they had a combined 19 victories, with Pam owning 12 of those. They each added one more win to their totals today on a beautifully cool and sunny Saturday morning over the 4.5 mile combo-course consisting of the up Chalybes and down Hemlock sections.
Jeff waited until about a half mile to kick things into high gear and put some distance between himself, the Levy brothers and Mark Andrejczyk. He kept the burners on the rest of the race and crossed the line in 25:32 (5:40 pace), about 30 seconds ahead of Adam and Andrew Levy. Mark A is a familiar face that we haven't seen very frequently at Roxbury this year. Despite not having raced in quite a while he ran a great race.
Pam continued her winning ways with win #13, placing about a minute ahead of second place finisher Eunice Bussom with a time of 31:08 (6:55 pace). Pam is currently sitting in the #6 spot in the prestigious Roxbury points standings.
People
The Fossil was out this week after his return last week from two and a half weeks in California. He was working at a math camp for "profoundly gifted" middle school students at the University of Santa Cruz, with a view of the Pacific Ocean outside his window. He ran his legs off, over 115 miles in the 16 days he was there, and came back feeling really tired.
Web Guy Jr, and his pal "Botzi" came back from Amsterdam where they drank a lot of Heineken and didn't do much running. They did walk just about every street in the city - that has to count for something no?
Welcome to Roxbury and the Roxbury Races to Cathy Racz. When we run the Jeep Trail course, we go past her house.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much
as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind
curves.) Also, it is much safer if we are all
on the same side of the road,
instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's sometimes more fun if you win. Set goals you can realistically achieve.
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top, we have a couple of
guys who would rather be playing golf.
Then we have the crowd at the starting line applauding Walt Schuttler and Carl Hunt for their extraordinary run at the Leadville Marathon.
Then we have three three Demings, Chris, his brother Larry, and Larry's daughter Amanda. Those that hung around after the race this week were treated to an impromptu concert by Larry. He plays quite a fiddle.
Along the side of the results we have a couple of people trying to straighten the posts in the parking lot. Next is a shot of two Mark's one's a LoSacco and the other's a Zerbe.
Third in that column are the three Neils ladies, Lili, April and Katie.
Way at the bottom, notice the Dragon is back. There are sea slugs in Santa Cruz, but no dragons.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
