Jeff Sheldon wins a lot of Roxbury races.
This week, he ran like a winner,
going
out hard, running tough on the hills, cruising smoothly down the hills.
Usually, such tough, quality running wins the race. Nineteen year old
David Hunt was in the race, though, and he didn't know the script. And
when Jeff and David turned onto West Apple Lane, with just half a mile to go,
they were still side-by-side. And David still had speed. He turned
on the gas and pulled away to a narrow three-second victory. What a race!
It was an exciting race for fourth place, too. As they approached Good Hill Road, Mark LoSacco just couldn't keep up with GasCan Chris Deming, and, for the first time, Chris beat Mark, pulling away for a 30 second win.
Among the women, only two places separated winner Eunice Bussom from Cindy Scannell, as they finished 19th and 21st respectively, but two places were almost two minutes, so it wasn't as close as a glance at the results might suggest.
People
The Fossil is back from a week in
Knoxville and half a week scurrying around New York State. First he was at
MathFest, the annual summer meetings of the Mathematical Association of America,
and then he was working with his co-editor putting the final touches on a book,
due to come out about New Year's.
Web Guy Jr, and his pal "Botzi" are back from a quick trip to Amsterdam. They say they didn't run a step, and that their client was a bottling company named Heineken. Ever hear of them?
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much
as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind
curves.) Also, it is much safer if we are all
on the same side of the road,
instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's sometimes more fun if you win. Set goals you can realistically achieve.
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top, we Jeff
Sheldon running with Andy Morehouse.

Then we have a shot of this week's women's winner Eunice Bussom, going so fast that the camera could hardly focus.
Then we have the crowd at the starting line applauding Walt Schuttler and Carl Hunt for their extraordinary run at the Leadville Marathon.
Then we have three three Demings, Chris, his brother Larry, and Larry's daughter Amanda. Those that hung around after the race this week were treated to an impromptu concert by Larry. He plays quite a fiddle.
Along the side of the results we have a couple of people trying to straighten the posts in the parking lot. Next is a shot of two Mark's one's a LoSacco and the other's a Zerbe.
Third in that column are the three Neils ladies, Lili, April and Katie.
Way at the bottom, notice the Dragon is back. There are sea slugs in Santa Cruz, but no dragons.
