4.3 miles - High Bridge Rd. Reverse October 14, 2006 8:30 am. - frigid! |
|

38 People and 1 Dog were on hand today at 8:30 AM despite the frost advisories to run the 34th race of the 2006 Roxbury Road Race Series. The course this week was the mostly out-and-back High Bridge Rd. Reverse 4.3 mile route that features a downhill out and uphill back.
With any out-and-back what goes down must eventually go back up. For David Hunt and Ellen McCurtin going back up was less of a challenge than it was for everyone else as they each captured their 3rd victories of the season.
David was content to run with a pack of 7 or so for the first 2 miles down South St. Going down is easy, so the group was talkative. The talking stopped when it was time to climb back up and things got more serious. By the mile 3 marker David was out to a comfortable lead which he never relinquished. Meanwhile at the West Apple Lane turn Hans Put took things up a notch and passed Scott Holmes and Chris Deming to finish second.
Less than 40 seconds separated Ellen McCurtin and second place finisher Pam Quist this week. For Ellen, this is her third consecutive victory.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind curves.) Also, it is much safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's sometimes fun to beat people. Set goals you can realistically achieve.
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top, we have Mike Torpedo Ruospo crossing the finish line to win the Roxbury Marathon. Then we have David Redline and Dan Lynch cruising through a water stop. Wasn't it a beautiful day?
Below that, we have asters blooming along a rock wall, just to remind us how lucky we are to be able to run in a beautiful place like Roxbury almost every Saturday.
Then, in second place, David Redline crossing the finish line.
A little below is "Super" Mario Hasz, motoring past the rec area.
Down the side we have people trying to straighten the posts in the parking lot. Then there are two Marks, Zerbe and LoSacco. After that, we have the Fossil checking his time on a watch that matches his t-shirt, and then our new Shepaug Trail sign at the starting line. Way at the bottom, notice the Dragon is back.
Most new pictures today are by Ron Karl. Others are by Amanda and Collin's dad. Thanks, Larry.
