2006 Roxbury Race #35

4.3 miles - High Bridge Rd. Reverse

October 21, 2006

8:30 am.  - rapid warming from 34 to 45 degrees

McCurtin and Put

It was a chilly morning, with frost in many areas.  People arrived at the starting line, several in long-sleeved red shirts, several others in fluorescent orange hats, nobody wearing both.  Red shirts led orange hats 4-3.  It's good to see people dressing brightly, since it makes it easier for the cars to see us.  (Then we hope they try not to hit us.

Hans Put went out like a shot and cruised to ean easy win by a minute and a half over points leader Mark LoSacco.  Mark overhauled Mike Abraham near the end of the race to grab second place by 13 seconds.

Ellen McCurtin finished sixth overall to win for the women, a minute ahead of Jenna Hannibal, who, in turn was 50 seconds ahead of Pam Quist.

Adventures

Women's points leader Pam Quist knows everyone involved in this week's news of the rabid coyote, the runner and the logger in Washington.

Kurt Thoennessen and his wife Andrea are 52 days (but who's counting) from the expected arrival of their first child.  Time will fly and before we know it, they will be bringing children to the races, just like Larry Deming and Brian Vanderheiden did this week.

Dan Lynch went over on his ankle in the first mile of the race today.  He was spotted sitting forlornly on a rock ready to hobble back to the finish line, but encouraging words from Sharon Gawe got him going again and he finished 17th overall.

Safety

Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.

It is safest if we face traffic as much as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind curves.)  Also, it is much safer if we are all  on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

  3. It's sometimes fun to beat people.  Set goals you can realistically achieve.

Be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.

This week's pictures

Up top, we have Bob Satterlee stretching near the parking area.

Below that, Al Mletzko warms up in the fog.

After that, Mike Abraham is going too fast before the race, burning up his extra energy so that Mark LoSacco can beat him at the end of the race.

A little below is "Super" Mario Hasz, motoring past the rec area during the marathon a couple of weeks ago.

Down the side we have people trying to straighten the posts in the parking lot.  Then there are two Marks, Zerbe and LoSacco.  After that, we have the Fossil checking his time on a watch that matches his t-shirt, and then our new Shepaug Trail sign at the starting line.  Way at the bottom, notice the Dragon is back.
