3.52 miles - Down Hemlock November 18, 2006 8:30 am. |
|
Today's 3.52
mile race down Hemlock felt short to everyone that took part in last week's
eleven miler. While the distance was vastly different, the results were
familiar as Jeff Sheldon and Ellen McCurtin t
urned
in repeat victories.
Jeff Sheldon and Ryan Cheng went out fast today, but by the 2-mile mark Jeff had opened up a comfortable lead which he never relinquished despite stomach troubles over the last mile or so. Jeff covered the distance in 20:05 (5:42 pace), with Ryan finishing 23 seconds behind for second. Hans Put, Chris Deming and Mark LoSacco rounded out today's top five.
Today's victory marks Ellen's seventh victory of the year as she clocked 23:51 (6:47 pace). Women's point leader Pam Quist took second about 45 seconds later. They were followed by Eunice Bussom and Jenna Hannibal.
(The paper jams on the stopwatch. Until it gets fixed, next week or the week after, it would be helpful if people would write down their times, as well as their places, on the result sheet.)
Thanksgiving Day Race!
Join us this Thanksgiving Thursday November 23 at 9:30 AM for the annual 3-mile Run For A Cure at the Roxbury Congregational Church. The $5 entry fee benefits the Cancer Center at the New Milford Hospital and the Relay for Life. What a great way to justify all of the food you'll be eating later!
Youngest Roxbury Participant Ever
Race Director Bob Lewis believes that 7.5 month old Elliot Krebs is the youngest participant in the history of the series. Theresa Krebs chased Elliot the entire course and at times appeared to be gaining on him. But Elliot had age on his side (and maybe the 3 wheels underneath him helped too) so he managed to hold off Mom and beat her by a stride in a photo finish.
Kurt Thoennessen and his wife Andrea are 24 days (but who's counting) from the expected arrival of their first child. Time will fly and before we know it, they will be bringing children to the races, just like Larry Deming did again this week.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind curves.) Also, it is much safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's sometimes fun to beat people. Set goals you can realistically achieve.
Safety tip: If you are light-headed after a race or a long run, it's likely to be a symptom of dehydration. Some people get blurry vision and WebGuy gets plugged up ears.
Dehydration can have serious consequences, including heart attacks (your blood gets thicker because it doesn't have as much water in it and your heart overworks) and kidney failure. They say that severe dehydration is the best way for a male to experience pain that equals that of labor.
If you have any of these symptoms after running, then drink fluids. Keep drinking them until you've peed twice. Only then are you fully rehydrated.
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top, we have this week's winner Jeff Sheldon warming up with Andy Morehouse.
Down the side we have people trying to straighten the posts in the parking lot. Then there are two Marks, Zerbe and LoSacco. After that, we have the Fossil checking his time on a watch that matches his t-shirt, and then our new Shepaug Trail sign at the starting line. Way at the bottom, notice the Dragon is back.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
