2.4 miles - Up Chalybes November 25, 2006 8:30 am - 40 degrees, sunny |
|
We always begin and end the season with a couple of short races, a couple of
tours around our most popular courses, the 2.4 mile races on Chalybes Road.
This week, some people were a little tired from the Thanksg
iving
race, and some were probably still full from Thursday's feasts.
Over forty of us turned up. For the first time this season, there were icy spots on the road from where the recent rains had frozen. But that didn't change the results. Jeff Sheldon led people out fast, pursued by Phil Richey. Pam Quist notched yet another win this season. Pam has 20 wins this season and Jeff has 12.
(The paper jams on the stopwatch. Until it gets fixed, next week or the week after, it would be helpful if people would write down their times, as well as their places, on the result sheet.
We only got about ten times this week. Please send more, if you know them. Thanks to the people who have sent in their times. Send more to esandifer (at) earthlink (dot) net)
Thanksgiving Day Race!
Thanks to all who helped with and participated in the Thanksgiving race. With the rain, it was particularly challenging this year, but it least it didn't snow like it did last year.
Rookie of the Year
This year's Rookie of the Year competition is a particularly tough one. Top contenders include Brian Gildea, a rare rookie to earn a thousand points, currently standing 14th in the points. Russ Pribanic stands 19th with 807 points. Jenna Hannibal is third woman in her first season, standing 25th overall with 716 points. John Richers, a long time veteran of area races has only this year discovered Roxbury and stands 24th over all with 718 points. There are others with a good claim, too. Check next week's awards to see who takes the prize.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind curves.) Also, it is much safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's sometimes fun to beat people. Set goals you can realistically achieve.
Safety tip: If you are light-headed after a race or a long run, it's likely to be a symptom of dehydration. Some people get blurry vision and WebGuy gets plugged up ears.
Dehydration can have serious consequences, including heart attacks (your blood gets thicker because it doesn't have as much water in it and your heart overworks) and kidney failure. They say that severe dehydration is the best way for a male to experience pain that equals that of labor.
If you have any of these symptoms after running, then drink fluids. Keep drinking them until you've peed twice. Only then are you fully rehydrated.
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top, we have this week's winner Jeff Sheldon warming up with Andy Morehouse.
Down the side we have people trying to straighten the posts in the parking lot. Then there are two Marks, Zerbe and LoSacco. After that, we have the Fossil checking his time on a watch that matches his t-shirt, and then our new Shepaug Trail sign at the starting line. Way at the bottom, notice the Dragon is back.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
