The Roxbury Marathon
and half marathon
ROXBURY –Veteran distance runner Joe Laskey, 43, of Monroe, Conn., captured the 4th annual Roxbury Marathon with a time of 3-hours, 32-minutes, 35-seconds in a field that included runners from as far away as Los Angeles.
Laskey said that including ultras, he has completed about 30 marathons.
Andrei Aroneano, 53, of Ridgewood, N.J., placed second 3:37:02
Carrie Lombardo, 37, of Middletown, Conn., was the first female finisher and placed sixth overall in 4:08.36.
The marathon is named after Ed Sandifer, a longtime math professor at Western Connecticut State University and resident of Newtown, who has been a regular in the weekly Roxbury Road Race Series since 1986 and has completed the Boston Marathon every year since 1973.
The annual 26.2-mile run, which is sponsored by the Roxbury Road Race Series, attracted runners from as far away as Los Angeles; Sarasota, Fla.; and Riverview, Mich.
Some of them have embarked on efforts to run a marathon in all 50 of the states.
For example, Raef Guirges, from the Torrence section of Los Angeles, who finished in 5:37:08, has now completed 56 marathons, including one in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
He ran the marathon carrying an American flag.
There were 21 finishers in the marathon, nine more than the previous high.
Wallie Jahn, the owner of Road N Track Sports in New Milford, provided two scoreboard timers that were posted on the course.
The event had a $5 entry fee, with proceeds going to the Roxbury Road Race Series’ T-shirt/grants fund.
Brian Vanderheiden, 37, captured the half-marathon that was run in conjunction with the marathon, clocking a time of 1:38.21.
John Richers, 52, was second in 1:41,32.
The weekly Roxbury Road Race Series will start its 32nd season Saturday, Feb. 16, at 8:30 a.m. with a 2.4-mile run. There will be no entry fee.
The races, which start and finish near the Everett Hurlburt Community Park on West Apple Lane, are sponsored by the Roxbury Recreation Commission.
