2.3* miles - Down Chalybes February 24, 2007 8:30 am. - 15 degrees, very windy |
|
It was one of the coldest Roxbury races
ever, fifteen degrees and windy. We joked about putting a string on poor
finish line princess Dianne Haas and flying her like a kite. Indeed,
people were asking if it was actually the coldest ever. Not quite; it was
a little colder for the
opening
race in 2005. Remember when the folks from Red Bull came with the
refreshing cold beverages?
Just to be annoying, the wind was in our faces the whole race, except when we had the steep downhill and a tailwind that nearly lifted us off our feet. The wind was no help at all. The first corner would have been icy, so we moved the starting line about 150 yards in order to start after the icy patch. This shortened the course from its usual 2.4 miles to something more like 2.3 miles.
Forty people didn't have anything better (or warmer, or less windy) to do, and we had a good race. Last week's winner, Jeff Sheldon, cruised the course in 13.20, twenty-six seconds ahead of Kevin Kauffmann.
Among the women, Jenna Hannibal led start to finish, 10th over all in 16:13. Pam Quist was closing for the last mile, but came up short, 30 seconds back. She'd been third a mile from the finish, and put half a minute on Laura Hermann.
Safety

Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top is Bob Lewis trying to stay warm in his bright orange gloves. Then we have Bob Satterlee and our Finish Line Princess Dianne Haas leaning into the wind. It was a harsh day.
At the right we have this week's winner among the women, Jenna Hannibal, looking like the wind and the cold won't bother her today.
Along side the results we have a warmer day, Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest and then one of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
