2.8 miles - Hemlock Out and Back March 3, 2007 8:30 am. 30 degrees, sun, icy |
|
Conditions
were extraordinary. For the third week in a row, the intersection of West
Apple Lane and Rocky Mountain Road was covered with ice. This time,
though, virtually the whole course was icy, after
Friday's
floods throughout the state. Everything was wet when the sun went down,
and then temperatures in the mid 20's turned it all to black ice.
Race Directors Scott Benjamin and Bob Lewis were able to find a safe course, though, and save the race. They picked an out-and-back on Rocky Mountain Road. On the Rocky Mountain part, the rising sun caught the pavement well and eased the ice except on a few shady spots. Then the Hemlock part was on dirt, and the grit made most of it good footing. Still, people ran cautiously and times were, in general, awful.
First-timers John LaRosa and Christiano Maria were already 1-2, with a solid lead at the turn-around point near Rt. 67. That's where they were at the finish, as well.
Jenna Hannibal edged Pam Quist by just two seconds to win among the women and extend her lead in the Prestigious Roxbury Points Race to five points.
People
Jon Binzen returned to Roxbury for the first time since his fall last summer. Welcome back, Jon.
Dan Lynch had his knee surgery last week. He brought his son Brian to see him safely through the alternate course.
We missed our Finish Line Queen Dianne Hasz this week. She was swimming. Outdoors.
Safety

Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top is Bob Lewis trying to stay warm in his bright orange gloves. Then we have Bob Satterlee and our Finish Line Princess Dianne Hasz leaning into the wind. It was a harsh day.
At the right we have this week's winner among the women, Jenna Hannibal, looking like the wind and the cold won't bother her today.
Along side the results we have a warmer day, Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest and then one of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
