John-Paul 1-2; Quist turns table on Hannibal
Finally,
the conditions favored a race. We didn't have to modify the course, or
shorten it to make it safer. We just ran the course that
many
people say is their favorite, the 3.53 mile race down Hemlock and back on South
Street.
There
were no new winners this week. John LaRosa won for the second week in a
row, with a fast time of 19:19, 40 seconds ahead of Paul LaRosa.
Among the women, Pam Quist, winner of the season's first race, edged Jenna Hannibal, winner of the second and third.
People
Andrea brought Kara Thoennessen to her first race today. Kara is still too young to hold her own head up long enough for a running stroller, so Andrea says that it will be a while before she can get back in shape and join us at the starting line. For now, she'll frequent the finish line instead. There's a picture at the right
Dan Lynch continues his recovery from knee surgery. He came in second among those who chose the alternate course. We turned him loose at the finish line and so have over 60 new pictures to use over the next several weeks.
Finish
Line Diva Dianne Hasz was back this week, after a day of swimming
outdoors last Saturday. She brought her grand-neice Erika
and -nephew Evan. Erika
helped at the finish line, and Evan ran the
whole race.
Spiderman made an appearance at the starting line today. By the time the race itself began, though, he'd disappeared, probably called away for some emergency. We got a picture, though.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top on the left we have one of those pictures that Dan Lynch took. It's John LaRosa winning the race.
At the right, we have Mo van Moffaert, in her spiffy (and cheap) orange top, edging a fashion-impaired Chris Powderly (it's gotta be the clothes) at the finish line, with Sharon Gawe the speck in the back ground.
Then we have Andrea and Kurt's Official Roxbury Baby Kara Picture. Can you tell that they are proud parents?
Then we have Pam Quist and Jenna Hannibal, the only ones who have won among the Roxbury Women so far this year. They are polite rivals during the race, and friends before and after. Both are teachers.
Along side the results we have a warmer day, Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest. Then we find proof that Spiderman came to Roxbury, and near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
