LaRosa and Quist Romp Again
Spring
started more than two weeks ago, and the Boston Marathon, famous for its heat
waves, is just a week away, but spring has yet to return to Roxbury. It
has visited a couple of times, but ice and snow still lurk beneath trees and
behind rock walls, and temperatures begin the day in the 20's.
More than forty hearty soles set toe to starting line for an excursion down Hemlock, then up the fearsome 4.2 mile Ranney Hill Road course.
John LaRosa and Jeff Sheldon had their own battle about three minutes ahead of everyone else. LaRosa won his fourth race in a row, with a time of 24:08, thirty-four seconds ahead of Sheldon. Three minutes back, Dave Harvey edged Mike Ruospo by thirty-six seconds for third place. Ruospo's fourth-place finish moved him into first place in the Prestigious Roxbury Points Race, one point ahead of Chris Deming, who finished a leisurely sixteenth today.
Pam Quist finished first among the women, fifth overall with a time of 28:20. Jenna Hannibal held on to first place in the Points, by a mere four points, finishing 51 seconds behind Pam and eighth place overall.
Next week, we have our traditionally short race so Boston Marathoners don't get too tired before their race the next Monday. We'll go 2.4 miles up the Chalybes hill.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top on the left we have John LaRosa winning his first race.
At the right, we have Mo van Moffaert, in her spiffy (and cheap) orange top, edging a fashion-impaired Chris Powderly (it's gotta be the clothes) at the finish line, with Sharon Gawe the speck in the back ground.
Then we have Pam Quist and Jenna Hannibal, the only ones who have won among the Roxbury Women so far this year. They are polite rivals during the race, and friends before and after. Both are teachers.
Along side the results we have a warmer day, Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest. Then we find proof that Spiderman came to Roxbury, and near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
