Hannibal and Sheldon Cruise
Glorious weather finally arrived in Roxbury. Long
sleeves and legs were evident before the race, while the temperature hovered in
the low to mid 40's, but the sun was up, and it was a balmy 50 to 55 by the time
8:30 rolled around, and most people were in shorts and t's by race time.
Jeff Sheldon ran like he was shot from a gun and cruised to a two-minute win with a brisk 5:41 per mile pace. His pursuit team of John Hirsch, Mark Andrejczyk and Chris Deming stayed fairly close for half the race, but they split up about the turn-around, and Jeff drifted away.
Jenna Hannibal ran a 7-minute pace to finish 10th over-all, about forty seconds ahead of her nearest rival, Eunice Bussom.
Boston
Six of today's runners ran Monday's Boston Marathon. Their performances, as well as those of some others who didn't run today, are at the Roxbury in Boston page.
Our first Boston finisher, Chris Deming, ran a 3:01 on Monday and was first among the Boston finishers today, fourth overall. Brian Vanderheiden, second in Boston in 3:14, was third among Boston finishers today, 17th overall, switching relative positions with Mike "Torpedo" Ruospo, who ran a 3:18 in Boston and finished fifth today. Other Boston finishers at today's race were Bruce Goulart (4:41), Ed Sandifer (3:45) and last year's points winner Mark LoSacco (3:29).
Conditions at Boston were the most
threatening in at least 35 years. (Ask the Fossil. He was there.) However,
the threats didn't deliver. It rained early, so that everyone had wet
feet, and there was an occasional brisk headwind, but temperatures were on the
cool side, not really cold. Most people dressed appropriately, lowered
their expectations a little bit, and finished only mildly
disappointed.
The winning male was SEVEN minutes slower than last year's winning time.
The conditions dramatically affected the elite runners, but didn't seem to
bother the rest of us.
Now we just wait until next year.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top on the left we have this week's winner, Jeff Sheldon.
Below that, we have a shot from last year of Scott Benjamin telling us about the race.
Then we have Pam Quist and Jenna Hannibal, the only ones who have won among the Roxbury Women so far this year. They are polite rivals during the race, and friends before and after. Both are teachers.
Along side the results we have a warmer day, Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest. Then we find proof that Spiderman came to Roxbury, and near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
