2007 Roxbury Race #10

4.3 miles - High Bridge Road

Hannibal and Sheldon Cruise

A cold, rainy week concluded with a less cold and less rainy Saturday for the 4.3 mile Roxbury Road Race.    We ran the High Bridge Road course in advance of next week's Mid Spring Challenge.  The course featured two fast, comfortable miles at the start, a few hundred yards of the rugged eponymy of High Bridge Road, and then a grueling two-mile struggle back to the start/finish line.

For the first mile and a half, Lou Denaro pressured last week's winner Jeff Sheldon.  Lou was putting the final touches on his training for a fitness test he has at work later this week.  Since that features running a mile and a half, Lou gave it all he had.

As Lou backed off, Jeff went on to win by over three minutes, and the pursuit team, all  survivors of the Boston Marathon less than two weeks ago, one-by-one overtook Lou.  First came Chris Deming.  He was followed by  Mike "Torpedo" Ruospo, and then Mark LoSacco.  Mark caught Mike on the hill and Lou held on for fifth place.

Good luck in the fitness test, Lou.  We hope we helped.

It was a little closer and less dramatic among the women.  Jenna Hannibal was first among the women, eighth overall, seven places, but only a minute and forty seconds ahead of her nearest competition, Lisa Andrews.  Lisa enjoyed a minute and five seconds, four places, on Deborah Schmidt.

   Safety

Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.

It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible.  Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

  3. It's more fun if you run well

Be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.

This week's pictures

Up top on the left we have this week's winner, Jeff Sheldon.

Below that, and on the right we have Ron Karl signing up before the race.  Notice that there's no cash box!  Roxbury races are usually free, but next week is an exception.  It will cost $5 for the Mid Spring Championship.

Below that, and coordinating nicely with Ron Karl's t-shirt, is a photo of a (male) turkey, showing off before the race in front of two (female) turkeys, off to the left and not visible in the photo.  It's that time of year for turkeys.

Along side the results we have a warmer day, Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background.  Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest.  Then we find proof that Spiderman came to Roxbury, and near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.

Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
