4.2 miles - Hemlock-Ranney Hill May 12, 2007 8:30 am. 61 degrees - sunny and bright |

Hunt and Hannibal Romp
Saturday dawned sunny and bright, the first race of the
season where the temp
erature
was over 60 degrees. It made people friendly at the starting line, and the
top runners went out in a slow and conversational group.
After a few minutes, though, things got serious, and David Hunt breezed away for a two minute win. For second place, though, Chris Deming had just a two second edge over Mark LoSacco.
Jenna Hannibal was the first woman, 12th place over all, a minute and six places ahead of Eunice Bussom.
Recent birthdays
Our records* suggest that a few people have celebrated birthdays recently. Belated, and perhaps badly mis-timed birthday greetings go out to David Hunt and John Murphy Jr.
* We keep track of people's ages. When the age you put on the sign-up sheet goes up, we guess that you've had a birthday. But we're wondering what to believe about Eunice Bussom, who reported being 28 last week, but got sent back in time and was only 27 this week.
People
This week Eunice Bussom left the keys back at the starting line for safe keeping.
Jocsie Norris joined new friends Amanda Deming and Collin Deming helping out at the finish line this week.
We were a little confused about the course this week. The Web Page said we'd be running a 4.5 mile course up Chalybes and down Hemlock, but the hard-working person who gets up early and marks the course every week put the signs up for the 4.2 mile course that goes down Hemlock and up Ranney Hill Road. Oops.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top on the right we have Smiling George Hermann, happy because another race is safely into the books (and on the Web.)
Below that we have a crowd scene from the start, featuring Lou Denaro in the foreground, with a lot of people you might recognize in the background.
Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Where's Sinnead been this year? Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest. Then we have brightly colored Brian Vanderheiden and Mark LoSacco. Near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
