Moonlight hangover thins field
Eunice Bussom bags first win
Rookie
Matt Lundy made it look like a race at the start, as he stepped out to an early
lead, with a regular top-five trio of Lou Denaro, Chris Deming and Brian
Vanderheiden just a few steps behind. Meanwhile, Jeff Sheldon hung back,
starting about 25th among the 36 Saturday morning racers.
By the time they got to the top of Chalybes, just before the big downhill, Jeff's long legs had taken him to the front, and Matt's early efforts had made his legs heavy. By the end, Jeff had pulled away to win by a full minute, and Lundy had drifted back to fifth place
Among the women, Eunice Bussom won her first race of the season 13th overall and a minute ahead of Lisa Andrews.
The field was a bit thinner than usual, only 36 runners in the regular race and one in the alternate. It was not the fault of the weather, which was muggy and just a little bit warm. More likely people stayed home after the previous evening's Moonlight 5k in New Milford.
Recent birthdays
Our records* suggest that a few people have celebrated birthdays recently. They include this week's winner, Jeff Sheldon, as well as Joe Mendes, Bob Lewis and Corinne Bellemare. Also, Chris Zarzycki's age changed, but that's because last week we couldn't read his writing.
* We keep track of people's ages. When the age you put on the sign-up sheet goes up, we guess that you've had a birthday.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners. (You know who you are.)
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top on the right we have this week's winner for the women, Eunice Bussom, from a race last year.
Below that we have a crowd scene from the start, featuring Lou Denaro in the foreground, with a lot of people you might recognize in the background.
Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Where's Sinnead been this year? Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest. Then we have brightly colored Brian Vanderheiden and Mark LoSacco. Near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
