Lucky 7s: Joe Mendes, Sharon Gawe finish 7th
David Hunt, Jenna Hannibal win Bill Burley championship
This year's Bill Burley Mid-Summer Championship fell on
what some people think will be the luckiest day of the Century,
07/07/07. If they're right about the Lucky part, then Joe Mendes and
Sharon Gawe should go home feeling extra lucky, as they finished 7th in their
respective divisions in this week's challenging five-mile race.
Over-all winners were David Hunt for the men, Jenna Hannibal for the women. Jenna had a fairly easy time of it, surviving early challenges to win by about four minutes.
It was tougher for David, who finished only ten seconds ahead of last week's winner, Cornell University runner Andrew Levy.
This week vs last week
Twenty-seven people ran this same course last week, and, on the average, they improved by only seven seconds for the experience. Most improved was Charlie Euston, over two minutes faster. Russ Prbanic was most consistent, only four seconds slower this week. He was also closest to the average improvement, just 4 + 7 = 11 seconds off, edging out Nate Mahrer who was 19 seconds faster this week, 12 seconds off.
Complete details are after the results, before the current standings, near the bottom of the page.
Hall of Fame
Two names were added to the Roxbury Road
Race Hall of Fame this week, both veterans of the 1980s.
The Fossil remembers that Bob Bouclier won the first Roxbury Race that the Fossil ever ran in, way back in 1986, and "Bouc" was already an established champion by then. That was on the Squire Road course that we ran on this week, but it was 4.4 miles from the old starting line at Booth Free School. He was a master of the Big Race, easy to beat for many weeks in a row, before suddenly running twenty seconds a mile faster than he had been. Then he would set a blistering early pace and hold on for a win.
Casey Gawlick, on the other hand, would do what Joan Benoit used to call "stink up the course" for the first half of a race, just hang around in third or fourth place for two or three miles and not do anything, but then he'd pour it on for the end of the race to win. We used to say he was using the first half of the race as a training run to get in shape for the second half. Casey is a teacher and was Director Bob Lewis's PE teacher in high school.
People
This week Wallie Jahn (pictured below) made his first appearance of the year and came from behind to clobber the Fossil in the last mile of the race. Wallie owns the running shop on the Green in New Milford. The Fossil, on the other hand, beat points-leader Steve Haas for the first time this season.
Mario Hasz has been missing for a few weeks, and is recovering from some eye ailments. We wish him a speedy recovery and a swift return to Roxbury.
Christina Clark
has been scarce at the races for a while. She used to live on River Road
in Roxbury, but now she lives in New Milford, and she brought her one-year old
daughter Katie. Katie brought her
stroller so that she and Mom could enjoy the
race together. It was tough on all those hills, and Katie
faded towards the end and Mom beat her by a
couple of seconds. Prasama Sangkachand
stepped in to help Katie the last few yards
across the finish line. It would have made a great picture.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top we have this week's top finishers, winners of the Bill Burley Mid-Summer Championship five mile race; David Hunt on the left, Jenna Hannibal smiling on the right.
Then we have this year's new Hall of Fame inductees, Bob Bouclier on the left, Pete "Casey" Gawlick on the right.
Then there's a colorful picture of Wallie Jahn, proprietor of the running shop on the Green in New Milford.
Below that we have a crowd scene from the start, featuring Lou Denaro in the foreground, with a lot of people you might recognize in the background.
Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Where's Sinnead been this year? Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest. Then we have brightly colored Brian Vanderheiden and Mark LoSacco. Near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
