Deming + Schafer triumph
Glorious day for a race
Those races down South Street sure are
easy, aren't they? For the first two miles. Then something always
happens, and, one way or another, we have to get back up to the Start/Finish
Line.
That gentle downhill that made the first two miles so smooth and comfortable
turns into a monster, whether we go back up South Street, turn onto the Jeep
Trail or go around to Apple Lane. You can't fool gravity.
This week we ran 6.4 miles, two miles down the hill, about two fairly flat miles, and then back up the hill to South Street. Gazelles turned into penguins. Glorious scenery turned into background noise. That background noise was drowned out by screaming thigh muscles and the sounds of gasping lungs. It's a tough course.
Wiley Chris Deming took it out relatively slowly, letting Joe Mendes and Cole Rossiter control the early pace as he and Lou Denaro watched and waited. Sure enough, Joe and Cole both cracked and faded to finish third and seventh, respectively, as Chris inched away to beat Lou by a 48 second margin.
The women's race was exciting, too, as first-time winner Mary Shafer edged first-time Roxbury racer Maryann Bryant-Rubio by just 24 seconds, finishing 13th and 15th respectively.
People
Tough-as-Nails Corinne Bellemare continues her recovery from heart ailments and that part is going quite well, but now she's suffering a case of Lyme disease. It doesn't stop her from doing what she can at Roxbury, as evidenced by the results below.
Nora Hulton is banged up, too, after a swift encounter involving her bicycle and someone else's car. The driver didn't look. The cyclist has a broken collarbone, but she's a superstar at physical therapy and a model of good posture.
We're anxiously awaiting news from Mario Hasz, battling some eye problems. We wish him the best and we miss him and his lovely wife Dianne, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Steve Haas has been on vacation in Rhode Island this week, but since his lead in the Prestigious Roxbury Points Race is so precarious, he's traveled back last week and this to run in the races. He's holding on to his lead, but all that softball and beach volleyball, not to mention all the driving, is bad for his running muscles, and even the Fossil beat him both weeks.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top we have this week's one-two finishers, Lou Denaro on the left, Chris Deming on the right. Below that we have a crowd scene from the start of last week's Mid-Summer Championship featuring Wallie Jahn in the foreground, with a lot of people you might recognize in the background.
Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Where's Sinnead been this year? Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest. Then we have brightly colored Brian Vanderheiden and Mark LoSacco. Near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
