A Beautiful Morning for a Race
The hot weather that wrecked runners last week on the challenging Painter Ridge course broke on Friday setting up beautiful conditions for this week's installment of the Roxbury Road Race Series. Today's race, the 3.52 mile Up Hemlock course provided the runners a much needed respite from last week despite the long dirt road climb after mile two.
Jeff Sheldon and Jenna Hannibal enjoyed the race even more than the rest of us as they picked up season wins number 9 and 11 respectively. Jeff emerged from the back of the starting group to surge to the front, taking Mark LoSacco and Chris Deming by surprise. Jeff would lead the rest of the way, crossing the line in 20:30. Back a ways a heated battle took place for second place with Mark passing Chris just after mile one, and Chris taking it back at mile two. The pair pulled even with less than a half mile to go, and Mark went on to win the battle this week.
For Jenna, this was a bit of a welcome back race, as she had been absent for the last three. She came back in style, covering the course in 24:23, to finish ahead of second and third place finishers Eunice Bussom and Terri Lee.
People
Tough-as-Nails Corinne Bellemare continues her recovery from heart ailments and that part is going quite well, but now she's suffering a case of Lyme disease. It doesn't stop her from doing what she can at Roxbury, as evidenced by the results below.
Nora Hulton is banged up, too, after a swift encounter involving her bicycle and someone else's car. The driver didn't look. The cyclist has a broken collarbone, but she's a superstar at physical therapy and a model of good posture.
We're anxiously awaiting news from Mario Hasz, battling some eye problems. We wish him the best and we miss him and his lovely wife Dianne, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Steve Haas has been on vacation in Rhode Island this week, but since his lead in the Prestigious Roxbury Points Race is so precarious, he's traveled back last week and this to run in the races. He's holding on to his lead, but all that softball and beach volleyball, not to mention all the driving, is bad for his running muscles, and even the Fossil beat him both weeks.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top we have this week's female winner, Jenna Hannibal. Below that we have a crowd scene from the start the Mid-Summer Championship featuring Wallie Jahn in the foreground, with a lot of people you might recognize in the background.
Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Where's Sinnead been this year? Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest. Then we have brightly colored Brian Vanderheiden and Mark LoSacco. Near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
