Brookfield High School Harrier Captures 8.2-miler

Zuback Annexes Female Crown

Brookfield High School (BHS) junior James Moen, 16, placed first in an 8.2-mile run Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Roxbury Road Race Series, taking the lead on the second half of the course and crossing the finish line in 52-minutes, 30-seconds.

Moen was one of seven BHS runners to compete on the course, which included about four miles along the dirt surface on Judds Bridge Road.

Moen was the Bobcats third best runner last season, according to BHS coach Ed Butt. The veteran coach said that he projects that Moen will be even better this year.

Taylor Phillips, 16, placed second in 52:52. Chris Deming, 40, who was in first place as the runners took the turn at the halfway point on the out and back course, ended up third in 53:00.

Brookfield resident Lynn Zuback, 42, was the first female finisher and took 21st overall with a time of 67:21.

People

Tough-as-Nails Corinne Bellemare continues her recovery from heart ailments and that part is going quite well, but now she's suffering a case of Lyme disease.  It doesn't stop her from doing what she can at Roxbury, as evidenced by the results below.

Nora Hulton is banged up, too, after a swift encounter involving her bicycle and someone else's car.  The driver didn't look.  The cyclist has a broken collarbone, but she's a superstar at physical therapy and a model of good posture.

We're anxiously awaiting news from Mario Hasz, battling some eye problems.  We wish him the best and we miss him and his lovely wife Dianne, the Belle of the Finish Line.

Safety

Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.

It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible.  Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

  3. It's more fun if you run well

Be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.

This week's pictures

Up top we have  this week's female winner, Lynnie Zuback hanging out with Sinead Blevio.  Below that we have a crowd scene from the start the Mid-Summer Championship featuring Wallie Jahn in the foreground, with a lot of people you might recognize in the background.

Along side the results we have Brian Vanderheiden and Torpedo Ruospo battling the elements at Boston this year.  Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest.  Then we have brightly colored Brian Vanderheiden and Mark LoSacco.  Near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.

Down at the bottom, we have Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany.
