Sheldon Captures Mile

Rapid Lynn First Woman

"Ready, Go!" came suddenly this week, as a crowd of people who mostly run long and slowly had to try to change gears and move through a quick mile.  Some of the older ones sounded creaky on the uphill start, too.

When things leveled out after about 50 yards, then went down hill a little after that, people began to find their rhythm, such as it was, but by then Jeff Sheldon already had a ten yard lead.  He kept pulling away, and won by 22 seconds with a time of 5:01.  It was a little closer for second place, as Chris Deming, 5:23, beat Cole Rossiter by just four seconds.

Rapid Lynn Zuback took first place among the women in 6:28, 22nd overall.  Cindy Scannell, who was the last one to join us at the starting line, finished second among the women, 26th overall.

There is something quirky about these places, though.  We seem to have lost our #5 stick, so there was no 5th place this week.  To make the results fit the known times, we gave the #5 time to the #6 person, etc.  If this doesn't seem right, contact WebGuy and he'll try to fix it.  In the mean time, if anybody finds a #5 stick, could they return it?

Also, Kurt Thoennessen didn't take a stick this week, but said he ran a 6:39, so we didn't give him a place and stuck him in between 23rd and 24th.

Mark Zerbe caused a problem, too.  He injured his hamstring as he neared the end of the race, and so walked across the finish line and apparently got neither time nor place.  He says he finished in 6:26.  That would put him in the middle of a crowd of four people, Noah Rossiter, Larry Deming, Bob Lewis and Lynn Zuback.  We can insert him into the results if someone can tell us where to shove him.

People

Mario Hasz is back among us, a bit out of shape from his battle with a cancer on his eye.  He's improved a little since his comeback race last week.  Welcome back, Mario.

They weren't the only ones back after missing a spell.  The Fossil was gone for more than a month, visiting Montreal, San Jose and most of Germany.  In San Jose he got to do a book signing for one of his new books.  If you decide to buy one, get the one How Euler Did It.  It's starting to turn up cheap on eBay.

All of the Levy kids have gone back to school now, Adam, Andrew and Alana, so the Bevy of Levys is down to just Ross and Janet. Ross ran the race today, finishing 14th, and Janet gave valuable help at the finish line.

Safety

Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.

It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible.  Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

  3. It's more fun if you run well

Be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.

This week's pictures

Up top we have Mark LoSacco changing his shoes.

Then we have last week's 1-2 finishers among the women, still friends after the race.  Jenna Hannibal is on the left and Mary Schafer is on the right.  Both of them missed the race this week.

Below that we have a crowd scene from last week's foggy start, featuring winner Jeff Sheldon and camera-hog Mark LoSacco in the front row, as well as a number of others you should recognize.

Along side the results we have Brian Vanderheiden and Torpedo Ruospo battling the elements at Boston this year.  Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest.  Then we have brightly colored Brian Vanderheiden and Mark LoSacco.  Near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.

Down at the bottom, we have Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany. He was back in Germany recently, and the dragon is still there.
