Jenna Hannibal returns with big news
Chris Demming wins race
"Summer's
almost gone and winter's comin' on."
After a humid race last week, and a disastrously and tragically hot Chicago Marathon last Sunday, hats, gloves and long sleeves reappeared at Roxbury.
Chris Deming took a lead pack of four up Hemlock to and made the turn to scream down the huge hill on Chalybes Road. Over the 3.7 miles, the top four gradually drifted apart, and Chris, in first place, was only 38 seconds ahead of fourth-place Lou Denaro, less than a minute ahead of the Fossil himself.
Among the women, Jenna Hannibal, absent since school ended in June, returned to her winning ways, ninth place overall, and just over a minute ahead of her nearest rival, Mary Schafer, who finished 12th overall. For news about how Jenna spent her summer vacation, see the People section below.
We will glibly remark that there were some unique challenges with this week's results, especially the times. Brian Vanderheiden figured out what the problem was, and was able to explain it to WebGuy. Finally, WebGuy's PhD in mathematics comes in handy.
But, if WebGuy's so smart, how come he forgot to do the Points for September 22? Nobody knows, and a few people politely called it to his attention. Now we think that the points are right, and they include the September 22 results. Tell him if you see more problems like that.
People
Sometime during the summer, Jenna Hannibal ran into Frank Schildger, one of her friends from long ago. They'd known each other in high school, but this time things clicked. He's a jeweler with a shop in Washington Depot, so you can imagine that, when the two of them figured out what was happening to them and it was time to pop the question, he fashioned a really special ring. Somebody said "Jenna didn't run today's race; she floated." Indeed, she did look happy. It proves that really good love stories don't have to involve riding white horses or slaying dragons. They'll be getting married on November 17. Congratulations to both of them! And ask her to show you the ring.
Doug Lee watched today's race from the parking lot. He's still wiped out from last Sunday's Steamtown Marathon. It was his third marathon. He'd have been faster were it not for the heat. As it was, he got through half way in 1:33, but struggled to a 3:30 finish.
Justin Prbanic made his first-ever Roxbury appearance, and lost a duel with his father, Russ, by 17 seconds. Justin works in research and development for US Surgical in West Haven, the same place Dave Harvey has worked for over 20 years, and where Russ is planning to start working soon.
Shiloh Gawe was back this week. Despite a long battle with health problems, it was good to see our old friend back, only the second time this year.
Safety
The sun is low in the sky at 8:30 am these days, and it will be even worse when Standard Time returns in a few weeks. We all have to do our parts to make it easy for the cars, with whom we share the roads, to miss us, even if the sun is in their (or our) eyes. It works best if we all go to the same side, so that the cars can go around us instead of between us.
Always choose a safe line.
Try to stay on the same side of the road, usually facing traffic.
In general, follow the people in front of you. You can see them better than they can see you.
Call traffic warnings to other runners. "Car up!" or "Car back!" Even if it's a truck.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top we have John Murphy Jr running almost the speed of light.
Then we have today's 1-2 finishers among the women, still friends after the race. Jenna Hannibal is on the left and Mary Schafer is on the right.
Below that we have a crowd scene from the foggy start on September 22. In the front row we see John Kane and Eric Winkelstern, and behind them you should see a number of others you recognize.
Along side the results we have Brian Vanderheiden and Torpedo Ruospo battling the elements at Boston this year. Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest. Then we have Jon Binzen worrying about the fog in front of the pavillion. Near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany. He was back in Germany recently, and the dragon is still there.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com. For information contact Bob Lewis at bwlnm (at) aol (dot) com, or at 203 240 0162.
