Sheldon Shines For 12th Time On Roxbury Roads
ROXBURY – Jeff Sheldon, 27, of Southbury posted his 12th win of the season at the Roxbury Road Race Series, covering a rolling 5.0-mile layout in 30-minutes, 39-seconds on Saturday, Nov. 10.
Chris Deming, 41, who captured the 3.95-mile Bob Lewis MidAutumn Championship a week earlier, placed second with a time of 32:49. He also took first place in the point standings for the current season in the weekly series, which concludes Dec. 1.
He broke out of a tie with Joe Mendes, 41, of Brookfield, who was fourth in the 5.0-mile race, which included a trip down the long hill on Squire Road, with a time of 34:11.
Brian Vanderheiden, 37, placed third in 33:44.
Eunice Bussom , 28, was the first female finisher and took 14th overall in 37:41.
The weekly series will continue Saturday, Nov. 17, at 8:30 a.m. with an 11,.15-mile run that will include a trip up the steep incline on Botsford Hill Road. There will be no entry fee.
The series will co-sponsor the 3-mile Run For A Cure Thursday, Nov. 22, at 9:30 a.m. at the Roxbury Congregational Church on Route 317. There will be a $10 entry fee that can be paid that morning from 7:30 to 9:15 at the church. Proceeds will go to the cancer center at New Milford Hospital and the Relay For Life of the American Cancer Society. The church and the Roxbury Recreation Commission are the other co-sponsors.
The weekly races, which are sponsored by the Roxbury Recreation Commission, start and finish near the Everett Hurlburt Community Park on West Apple Lane.
The Roxbury Marathon will be held starting near the park on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 8:30 a.m. A half-marathon also will be run simultaneously. The $5 entry fee can be paid that morning from 7:15 to 8:20. There will be team options for both the marathon and the half-marathon.
