Sheldon wins long one

ROXBURY – Jeff Sheldon, 27, of Southbury easily captured his 13th victory this season at the weekly Roxbury Road Race Series, covering a demanding 11.2-mile layout in 1-hour, 11-minutes and 6 seconds on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Chris Deming, 41  the point standings leader for the 2007 season, which concludes Dec. 1 - finished second  in 1:16:29 on the hilly layout, which included a trip up the steep incline along Botsford Hill Road.

Norma Grom, 45, was the first female to cross the finish line and placed 13th overall in 1:29:15.

The weekly series will continue Saturday, Nov. 24, at 8:30 a.m. with a 2.4-mile run that will include a trip up the steep incline on Chalybes Road. There will be no entry fee.

The series will co-sponsor the 3-mile Run For A Cure Thursday, Nov. 22, at 9:30 a.m. at the Roxbury Congregational Church on Route 317. There will be a $10 entry fee that can be paid that morning from 7:30 to 9:15 at the church. Proceeds will go to the cancer center at New Milford Hospital and the Relay For Life of the American Cancer Society. The church and the Roxbury Recreation Commission are the other co-sponsors.

The weekly races, which are sponsored by the Roxbury Recreation Commission, start and finish near the Everett Hurlburt Community Park on West Apple Lane.

The Roxbury Marathon will be held starting near the community park on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 8:30 a.m. A half-marathon also will be run simultaneously. The $5 entry fee can be paid that morning from 7:15 to 8:20. There will be team options for both the marathon and the half-marathon.
