2007 Roxbury Race #39

2.4 miles - down Chalybes

November 24, 2007

8:30 am, 20 degrees, cold and sunny

Sheldon, Zuback claim cold race

only one race, plus the marathon, remain in the 2007 season

When most of us left the house before the race we were reading numbers like 17 and 19 on our thermometers.  It wasn't quite so cold when the race started, maybe 20 degrees, but being active people, we warmed up pretty quickly.

Jeff Sheldon was out like a shot, quickly building a 50 yard lead, then gradually extending it to a 26 second win over Peter Lofink.  Jeff clocked a quick 13:35, giving him the three fastest times of the year on this course.  On April 14, he'd run 13:29 going up the hill, and on June 2 he clocked 13:39 going down the hill, as we did today.

Among the women, Rapid Lynn Zuback made a move for the lead in the Prestigious Roxbury Points Competition, moving just 11 points behind leader Jenna Hannibal, and besting first time Roxbury runner Alissa Pajer by just 17 seconds.

People

WebGuy's son got married Saturday, November 7 at 3:00. Phil and Jenn thoughtfully gave WebGuy plenty of time to run Roxbury and still get to the wedding on time.  Their wedding photos are posted here on Flickr.

Mandy Deming, Princess of the Finish Line, ran her first long race this week.  She was ushered to the finish line by Prasama and Mo, but with her young legs, Amanda easily put them behind her as she kicked to the finish line.  Way to Go, Amanda!.

Cindy Scannell finished in 27 and a half-th place this week.  Actually, she finished last because she started 11:28 late, just about two minutes before Jeff Sheldon finished the race.  We spliced her into the results where she would have finished if she'd run the same time and started with the rest of us.

t-shirts arrived this week, custom designed, as usual, by Dave Harvey, and purchased through the generosity of the people who run the Roxbury Races.  Dave finished fourth this week, passed just before the finish line by Rocket Chris Deming.

Dudley Ong made his road race debut this week, finishing just a second ahead of his training companion Harry Ong, and winning his division.  The win put Dudley second in that division.

Nate Mahrer writes of his recent marathon

Ed,

Dan Lynch told me you like to keep track of marathons.I ran a 3:47:17 and Mary Schafer ran a 3:28:57 marathon at the Outer Banks last Sunday. Mary also finished 8th among women and 1st in her age group. You can verify this at obxmarathon.org.

This was only its second year. It goes from Kitty Hawk to Manteo by way of Kill Devil Hills, the Wright Brothers Memorial and Nags Head. There were <1000 runners in the full this year. There is also a half.  There are a couple of gentle hills before mile 20 that are barely worth mentioning (six strides and you're up and over). From roughly miles 10-13 to is a dirt path through some woods that everyone else complained about but reminded me of running through the woods in CT, so I loved it. There is one hill, a bridge, at Mile 23 and its difficulty was way overhyped by the flatlanders in NC. The only real challenge is the wind, but the only serious headwinds we faced were in the last two miles of the race.

Cheers,

Nate

Wandering Roxbury veteran Ken Moffitt lives in Switzerland now, where he ran the Lausanne Marathon two weeks ago in 3:19:59.3.  Indeed, the Swiss seem to time marathons to the tenth of a second.  Up top is a picture of him near the half way point.

Safety

The sun is low in the sky at 8:30 am these days, and it will be even worse when Standard Time returns in a few weeks.  We all have to do our parts to make it easy for the cars, with whom we share the roads, to miss us, even if the sun is in their (or our) eyes.  It works best if we all go to the same side, so that the cars can go around us instead of between us.

  1. Always choose a safe line.

  2. Try to stay on the same side of the road, usually facing traffic.

  3. In general, follow the people in front of you.  You can see them better than they can see you.

  4. Call traffic warnings to other runners.  "Car up!" or "Car back!"  Even if it's a truck.

  5. Dress brightly.  Cars see bright orange, blue and red better than they see gray.  Give them a chance to miss us.

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

  3. It's more fun if you run well

Be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.

This week's pictures

Up top we have Ken Moffitt running the marathon in Switzerland.

Then there's a picture of this year's t-shirt design, followed by a shot taken by the Roxbury Party Patrol, capturing Dan Lynch showing off his NYC Marathon medal to people who are probably too tired to care.  We're impressed, though.  And Dan came back faster than ever!

Then we have recent finishers among the women, still friends after the race.  Jenna Hannibal is on the left and Mary Schafer is on the right.

Below that we have a crowd scene from the foggy start on September 22. In the front row we see John Kane and Eric Winkelstern, and behind them you should see a number of others you recognize.

Along side the results we have Brian Vanderheiden and Torpedo Ruospo battling the elements at Boston this year.  Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest.  Then we have Jon Binzen worrying about the fog in front of the pavillion.  Near the bottom of the column, a shot of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.

Down at the bottom, we have Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany. He was back in Germany recently, and the dragon is still there.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com.  For information contact Bob Lewis at bwlnm (at) aol (dot) com, or at 203 240 0162.
