Mounting Arab-Israeli tensions fuel a wave of international terrorist incidents, while extremist offshoots of European leftist parties engage in violent attacks at home.

1972
Members of Black September raid the Olympic village in Munich. Seventeen people, including 11 Israeli athletes, are killed in the raid and subsequent shootout with German police.

1976
Following revelations of widespread abuses in the name of counter- terrorism, Attorney General Edward H. Levi issues guidelines limiting the FBI's authority to conduct domestic intelligence gathering.

1978
At the peak of anti-capitalist terrorism in Western Europe, former Italian Premier Aldo Moro is kidnapped and murdered.

 

1980s
The rise of Islamic fundamentalism adds to the ranks of terrorist groups based in the Middle East.

April 1983
The U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, is bombed, causing 16 deaths and more than 100 injuries. The same year Attorney General William French Smith eases restrictions on the FBI's powers of investigation.

October 1983
A suicide attacker drives a truck filled with explosives into the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 241.

June 1985
TWA Flight 847 is hijacked. U.S. Navy diver Robert Stethem is murdered on board, his body dumped on the tarmac in Beirut.

Oct. 7, 1985
Palestinian terrorists hijack the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt, and murder Leon Klinghoffer, a 69-year-old American invalid.

February 1988
Marine Lt. Col. William Higgins, a member of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, is kidnapped and later murdered.

December 1988
A bomb destroys Pan American Flight 103 en route from London to New York City over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 270 people.

Devastating terrorist attacks occur on U.S. territory amid an escalation of large-scale, indiscriminate attacks worldwide.

Feb. 26, 1993
Terrorists explode a bomb beneath New York City's World Trade Center, killing six and injuring more than 1,000. Four Islamic fundamentalists are convicted and each sentenced to 240 years in prison.

February 1995
Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, the alleged mastermind behind the World Trade Center bombing, is arrested in Pakistan and extradited to the United States, where he awaits trial.

March 20, 1995
Release of poisonous gas in Tokyo's subway system kills 12. Members of an obscure religious cult, Aum Shinrikyo (Supreme Truth), are charged in the attack after an intensive investigation.

April 19, 1995
A truck bomb destroys the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people, including 19 children. Two Americans are charged in the attack.

April 25, 1995
Gilbert Murray, a timber industry lobbyist, is killed by a parcel bomb in Sacramento, Calif. The attack is believed to be the 16th in 17 years by an elusive terrorist known as the “Unabomber” because many of his victims have been affiliated with universities. In a rare public declaration, the Unabomber calls for “the destruction of the worldwide industrial system.”

June 7, 1995
The Senate approves anti-terrorism legislation aimed at strengthening the government's powers to fight terrorism at home and abroad. With House passage of a similar bill expected in late July or early August, the legislation is expected to become law before year's end.

June 27, 1995
The Unabomber warns in a letter that he plans to blow up an airliner departing from Los Angeles International Airport over the busy Fourth of July weekend, prompting massive security. In a later communication, he says the threat was a hoax designed to gain publicity for his cause and promises further violence if the media doesn't publish his lengthy manifesto.

October 31

Jewish terrorist offensive against British rule in Palestine begins, with a wave of bomb attacks on police vehicles, railway sites and Haifa oil refinery. One policeman, one soldier and two railway workers killed.

November 27

Eight British soldiers killed in bomb attack on police station Jerusalem, Palestine, in Jewish Irgun terrorist attack.

1946

January 7

Three American civilian officials killed when Nazi "Werewolf" terrorists burn down their house in Passau, Germany.

March 11

Iranian scholar Amhed Kashravi stabbed to death by Fedayyan-e eslam guerillas in Iran.

July 22

Ninety people killed and forty five wounded after Jewish terrorists blow up the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, Palestine, which was home to British government and military offices. The terrorists held workers at pistol point while they planted the explosives in the basement of the hotel.

September 30

One US soldier killed when ambushed by terrorists at Fort McKinley, Philippines.

October 31

British embassy in Rome, Italy, wrecked by two bombs in suit cases left by Jewish Irgun terrorists. No casualties.

1947

July 12

Jewish Irgun terrorists kidnap and then hang two British Army sergeants. The terrorists were trying to secure the release of three Irgun members who had been sentenced to death by the British authorities in Palestine.

September 29

Jewish Irgun terrorists bomb police station in Haifa, Palestine, killing four British and four Arab policemen, as well as two Arab civilians. Forty six people injured.

December 3

Train derailed near Arras, France, by Communist terrorists killing twenty and injuring forty.

December 12

Twenty Arabs, five Jews and two British soldiers killed and thirty wounded in Jewish terrorist bomb attacks on buses in Haifa and Ramleh, Palestine. British mandate to rule Palestine ends on 15 May 1948; state of Israel established.

December 29

Jewish Irgun terrorists throw grenades from passing taxi into café near the Damascus gate, Jerusalem, Palestine, killing eleven Arabs and two British policemen.

January 30

Indian independence leader and statesman Mahatma Gandhi shot dead in Dehli, India, by Nathuram Vinayak Godse.

March 7

Two American diplomats murdered by Viet Minh terrorists in Saigon, Indochina.

March 11

Headquarters of the Jewish Agency, Jerusalem, Palestine, destroyed by Arab car bomb killing thirteen and injuring eighty four.

April 9

Jewish Irgun terrorist group attacks Deir Yassim, Palestine, murdering two hundred and fifty four Arab women and children captured in the remains of the village.

Bomb explodes near US embassy in Bogota, Colombia, during Organisation of American States conference.

May 8

American CBS correspondent George Polk murdered by three communists in Salonika, Greece, after he was lured to a meeting on a boat in the city's harbour. His body was dumped in the sea.

July 22

Pro-peace activist Stephen J Supina, drops home made dynamite bomb on United Nations headquarters in New York, United States. No damage caused and he later surrenders to the authorities.

September 17

United Nations mediator in Palestine, Swedish Count Folke Bernadotte, murdered by Jewish Stern gang extremist in Jerusalem, Palestine, who fired at point blank range through window of his official car.

December 3

British governor of Sibu, Sarawak, Duncan George Stewart, stabbed to death by anti-British Malayans in North Borneo.

1950

November 1

Puerto Rican nationalists attack Blair House in Washington DC, United States, in an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate US president Harry S Truman. One Secret Service agent and one terrorist killed.

1951

July 20

King Abdullah of Jordan assassinated by Arab extremist in Jerusalem, Jordan, while entering the Mosque of Omar to pray. The assassin and four others are hanged for their part in the murder.

September 11

Pakistani prime minister Lisquat Ali Khan shot dead while addressing public meeting in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, by Afghan fanatic.

October 6

Sir Henry Gurney, British High Commissioner in Malaya, killed after his motorcade was ambushed by Communist guerillas. Thirteen British soldiers escorting Sir Henry were also killed in the attack. This leads to major shake up of British counter-insurgency operations against the Communists.

1954

March 1

Five US congressmen were wounded when Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire in the Capitol Building, Washington DC, United States. All four of the terrorists were arrested after firing twenty five rounds.

March 17

Bus passengers killed when Palestinian terrorists cross into the Negev desert, Israel, and ambush the vehicle.

1955

April 1

Greek Cypriot EOKA terrorist campaign for independence begins with a series of bomb explosions around British controlled Cyprus.

August 20

Several dozen French civilians killed in the Philipevelle area of Algiers, Algeria, by FLN guerrillas. French security forces stage retaliatory attacks on Algerian civilians.

October 17

Five French soldiers and eight civilians killed in shooting attacks by Arab nationalist guerillas in Algeria.

1956

February 29

New Greek Cypriot EOKA bombing campaign starts against British rule on Cyprus leading to destruction of British Hermes aircraft at Nicosia airport on 3 March and a Dakota on 27 April. Violence continues for four years until Cyprus is granted independence by Britain.

October 3

Wife of a British soldier shot on Cyprus while shopping by Greek Cypriot EOKA terrorists.

1957

September 27

Political prisoners being flown from Santa Cruz to La Paz, Bolivia, take over the aircraft and force it to fly to Argentina, where they are granted political asylum.

December 12

Irish Republican Army attack British Army barracks at Armagh, Northern Ireland, but are repulsed after gun battle with guards.

1958

February 24

Argentine motor racing champion Juan Manuel Fangio is kidnapped from a hotel lobby in Havana, Cuba, by Twenty Sixth of July Movement to stop him taking part in a race and to embarrass the Cuban government.

June 27

Thirty US Marines kidnapped by Communist guerillas on Cuba, near the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay. All are eventually released unharmed.

November 1

Cuban airliner hijacked by the Twenty Sixth of July Movement and forced to attempt night landing in remote airfield in Cuba. The aircraft crashes killing seventeen of the twenty people on board.

1960

March

One hundred killed and two hundred injured when anti-Castro rebels blow up French freighter in Havana harbour, Cuba.

April 9

South African prime minister Henrik Verwoerd shot in face by anti-apartheid white farmer at a fair in Johannesburg, South Africa.

August 29

Jordanian prime minister and eleven others killed by bomb in the foreign ministry building, Amman, Jordan. Two of the bombers fled to safety and eleven others are sentenced to death for the attack.

1961

February 23

Cruise liner hijacked by Portuguese rebels, who take more than 550 passengers hostage. US and Brazilian warships intercept the ship and force the hijackers to surrender to the Brazilian authorities.

May 1

First ever United States aircraft hi-jacked and forced to fly to Communist Cuba. Puerto Rican born Abntulio Ramirez Ortiz forced the National Airlines Corvair 44O to fly to Havana at gun point and was then given asylum. He was jailed for twenty years when he returned to Maimi, United States, in 1975.

September 9

Organisation Armee Secrete (Secret Army Organisation/OAS) terrorists protesting about French moves to give Algeria independence attempt to blow up French President Charles De Gaulle in Aube, France, but road side bomb fails to explode.

December 16

African National Congress launch bombing campaign that damages government buildings throughout South Africa. This first ANC terror campaign lasts for eighteen months and involves some two hundred attacks.

1962

January

One women killed and thirteen people wounded when OAS terrorists bomb foreign ministry building at Quai d'Orasy, Paris, France.

August 22

OAS terrorists stage machine gun attack on car carrying French President Charles de Gaulle in a Paris suburb. The president escaped the attack unhurt and the former French soldiers who carried out the attack were all later arrested. Further unsuccessful assassination attempts were made by the OAS on 1 and 15 March 1963. Five more murder attempts on the president failed in 1964 and three attacks were made on him in 1965.

February 21

Black power leader Malcolm X shot dead during a public meeting in Auboadan ballroom, in Harlem, New York City, United States.

May 25

Three Israeli civilians killed in Al Fatah Palestinian terrorist attack on Jewish settlement at Ramat Hakovash, Israel.

September 1

British speaker of Aden state council murdered by Arab nationalists as he drove to a tennis club, Aden City, South Arabia. This follows an assassination attempt against a British police superintendent in August. Two weeks later seven British children were injured when a grenade was thrown at the Aden airport terminal.

1966

August 4

An American and two Colombians killed by bomb planted by left wing rebels in the Binational Centre, Bogota, Colombia.

September 26

El Condor nationalists hijack Argentine aircraft from Buenos Aires to British occupied Falklands in a bid to bring attention to Argentina's claim to the islands. They eventually surrendered their hostages and were returned to Argentina by the British authorities.

November 22

A DC-3 aircraft blown up in mid-air near Aden, South Arabia, killing all twenty eight people on board. Bomb was placed in baggage area of aircraft.

1967

March 23

Six government soldiers killed in Bolivia by Communist guerillas led by Cuban Che Guevara. Seven months later his group was tracked down by government troops and Guevara was killed.

June 30

Aircraft carrying Katangan rebel leader Moise Tshombe hijacked en route to Ibiza, Spain, and forced to land in Algeria in a bid to extradite him to his native Congo. The Algerians kept him under house arrest until he died two years later.

October 12

British European Airways Comet airliner destroyed by a bomb that detonated in the passenger cabin over Rhodes, Greece. All sixty six people on board died.

1968

February 21

A Delta Airlines DC8 was forced to fly to Havana, Cuba, in the first successful hijacking of a US commercial airliner since 1961. The hijacker was granted political asylum.

March 18

School bus hits land mine in Negev desert, Israel, killing two adults and injuring twenty eight children. The Israelis stage major retaliatory raid into Jordan to hunt down the Palestinian Al Fatah terrorists responsible.

April 4

Black civil rights activist Rev Martin Luther King shot dead in a hotel in Memphis, United States with long range sniper rifle fired by James Earl Ray. Large scale rioting erupts in many cities across America.

June 5

American presidential candidate Robert Kennedy murdered by Jordanian terrorist, Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, in Los Angeles, United States. His killer was arrested and became the cause of further terrorist attacks, as Arab terrorist groups demanded his release.

July 22

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine carry out first ever aircraft hijacking, seizing an El Al Boeing 707 in Rome, Italy, and diverting it to Algeria. Thirty two Jewish passengers held hostages for five weeks.

August 28

John Gordon Meir, US ambassador to Guatemala is murdered by a rebel faction when they force his official car off the road in Guatemala City and machine gun the vehicle. He is the first ever American ambassador to be assassinated by terrorists.

September 4

Three bombs explode in central Tel Aviv, Israel, killing one Israeli and wounding seventy one civilians.

October 12

A US Army officer serving as an advisor to the Brazilian army is gunned down in his home, in San Paulo, Brazil by left wing guerillas, who falsely claim he is a Vietnam "war criminal".

November 22

Mahaneh Yehuda market, Israel, bombed by Al Fatah Palestinian terrorists killing twelve civilians and injuring fifty two.

December 26

One Israeli killed in Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine machine gun attack on El Al aircraft at Athens airport, Greece. Two terrorists were captured but later released by the Greek government after a Greek aircraft was hijacked to Beirut. Three days after the Athens attack Israeli commandos raid Beirut airport, Lebanon and blow up thirteen Arab airliners worth $43 million.

1969

February 18

Palestinian terrorists attack El Al Boeing 707 on runway at Zurich airport, Switzerland, raking the fuselage with gunfire, killing the pilot and three passengers. An Israeli skymarshall/secuirty guard returned fire killing one of the terrorists and drove off the reminder.

February 21

Palestinian terrorists explode a bomb in a crowded supermarket in Jerusalem, Israel, killing two people and injuring twenty.

August 29

TWA hijacked by Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terrorists after taking off from Rome, Italy, led by Leila Khalid, and forced to fly to Damascus, Syria. All the passengers and crew were released unharmed but the terrorists exploded a bomb in the cockpit of the aircraft.

September 4

American ambassador Charles Elbrick kidnapped in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by left wing terrorists and freed after 15 terrorists were released from jail.

October 22

Four civilians killed by Palestinian bombs in two apartments in Haifa, Israeli, and twenty others wounded.

December 12

Left wing anarchist terrorists kill sixteen and wound ninety when they blow up a bank in Milan, Italy. In July 1970, the same group de-rails a train near Rome, Italy, killing six and injuring one hundred.

1970

February 10

Three Arab terrorists attempt to hijack an El Al Boeing 707 at Munich airport, Germany, but are thwarted by the pilot who grappled with a terrorist in the terminal lounge. One Israeli is killed and eleven others wounded.

February 21

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine blow up a Swiss airliner just after it has taken off from Zurich, Switzerland, killing all forty seven people on board.

May 14

German left-wing terrorist leader Andreas Baader freed in rescue raid on West Berlin jail led by fellow terrorist Ulrike Meinhof. The two become notorious as leaders of the Baader-Meinhof gang.

September 6

"Skyjack Sunday" takes places at Dawson Field, in Jordan. TWA, Swissair, BOAC aircraft, along with more than four hundred hostages, were hijacked and ordered to the Jordanian airport by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Another terrorist team tried to hijack an El Al Boeing over London but security staff foiled the attempt and captured one of the hijackers, Leila Khalid, alive. The German, Swiss and British Governments all agreed to the PFLP's demands and released a number of terrorists, including Khalid, held in their jails.

October 10

Quebec separatists kidnapped state government minister Pierre LaPorte and later murdered him. The same group kidnapped British trade commissioner James Cross but released him unharmed.

1971

January 8

British ambassador to Uruguay Sir Geoffrey Jackson kidnapped and held for eight months by Tupamaros terrorists, demanding the release of political prisoners.

May 17

Turkish radicals assassinate Israeli consul general in Istanbul, Turkey, as part of a joint operation with Palestinian terrorists.

August 8

Black Panther leader George Jackson killed in gun battle inside San Quintin jail, United States.

November 28

Jordanian prime minister Wasfi Tal shot and killed by Palestinian Black September terrorists at the Sheraton Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. A month later the Jordanian ambassador in London, England, is shot and wounded by a Black September hit squad.

December 4

Protestant Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) terrorists explode bomb in Catholic area of Belfast, Northern Ireland, killing fifteen civilians.

1972

February 22

Irish Republican Army bomb attack on the British Parachute Regiment Officers Mess (club) in Aldershot, England, kills seven people.

March 4

Two killed and one hundred and thirty one people killed when Protestant terrorists bomb the Abercorn restaurant in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

May 5

Italian terrorist and publisher Giangiancomo Feltrinelli blew himself up while planting a bomb on an electricity pylon near Florence, Italy.

May 8

Israeli commandos storm hijacked Belgian Sabena airliner at Ben Gurion airport, Israel, killing the four Palestinian Black September terrorists aboard the aircraft and freeing the hostages. One passenger and five Israeli soldiers were killed.

May 11

US Army headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, attacked by Red Army Faction car bomb killing one American officer and injuring thirteen people. Three more US servicemen injured in another Red Army Faction car bomb attack on the US Army headquarters at Heidleburg, Germany, later in the month.

May 30

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and Japanese Red Army terrorists open fire in passenger terminal of Lod Airport, Israel, killing twenty six civilians and wounding seventy eight others. Japanese terrorist Kozo Okamoto survives and is captured by the Israelis.

July 21

Bloody Friday Irish Republican Army bombing attacks on Belfast, Northern Ireland, kills eleven people and injures one hundred and thirty civilians. Ten days IRA three car bomb attacks in the village of Claudy leave six dead.

September 5

Eight Palestinian Black September terrorists seize eleven Israeli athletes in the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany. In a bungled rescue attempt by the West German authorities nine of the hostages and five terrorists are killed.

September 9

Member of the Israeli embassy staff in London, England, killed by Palestinian letter bomb.

1973

February 4

Irish Republican Army explode bomb on coach packed with British soldiers on M62 motorway, England, killing twelve people.

March 12

Palestinian Black September terrorists murder an Israeli businessman on Cyprus.

August 5

Black September suicide squad attacks passenger terminals at Athens airport, Greece, killing three civilians and injuring fifty five.

August 4

Twelve people killed and forty eight injured when neo-fascists explode bomb on a train approaching Bologna, Italy. In May another right wing bomb at a demonstration in Brescia killed eight people.

December 17

Palestinian terrorists bomb Pan Am office at Fiumicino airport, Rome, Italy killing thirty two and injuring fifty. The terrorist then take seven Italian policemen hostage and hijack an aircraft to Athens, Greece, before flying on to Kuwait after killing one of the hostages. They then surrendered.

December 20

Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorists kill Spanish Prime Minister Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco, in a spectacular bomb attack in Madrid, Spain.

1974

February 4

American heiress Patricia Hearst kidnapped by Symbionese Liberation Army terrorists and later joined the group, participating in a raid on the Hibernia Bank in San Francisco, United States.

March 1

Saudi Arabian embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, seized by Black September terrorists and a number of diplomats from Arab and western countries taken hostages. The terrorists murder two American and one Belgian diplomat.

April 11

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command terrorists seize part of the Qirayt Shemona settlement in northern Israel. Eighteen Israelis killed after the terrorists detonate explosives during a rescue attempt.

May 15

Ninety children are held hostage by Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terrorists in a school at Ma'alot, Israel. Twenty one people are killed and seventy eight wounded during a bungled rescue attempt by Israeli special forces troops.

May 17

Car bomb exploded in Dublin, Ireland, killing 22 people. Protestant Northern Ireland terrorists blamed.

June 13

The Shamir kibbutz in Israel raided by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The four terrorists and several Israelis killed in ensuing gun battle.

June 26

Al Fatah Palestinian terrorists land by boat near Nahariya, Israel, and attempt to take civilians hostage. Three Israelis and all the terrorists are killed in a firefight.

November 21

Irish Republican Army sets off bombs in bars in Birmingham, England, killing 21 civilians, as part of major bombing campaign on the British mainland.

November 23

British DC-10 airliner hijacked at Dubai, UAE, by Palestinian Rejectionist front terrorists and eventually flown to Tunisia where a German passenger was killed.

1975

January 19

Arab terrorists attack Orly airport, Paris, France, seizing ten hostages in a terminal bathroom. Eventually the French provided the terrorists with a plane to fly them to safety in Baghdad, Iraq.

January 21

Indian railway minister Narayan Mishra blown up in Bihar, India, by Anang Marg terrorists.

January 27

Politician Peter Lorenz kidnapped in West Berlin, Germany, by June the Second Movement terrorists. Four days later the German government gave into the terrorists' demands for his release and five jailed terrorists were allowed to fly to freedom in South Yemen.

April 24

German left wing terrorists seized the German embassy in Stockholm, Sweden, and took twelve staff hostage to force the release of Baader-Meinhof gang terrorists. One hostage was murdered and a terrorist killed when explosives went off by accident. Led to formulation of the so-called "Stockholm syndrome" theory, which holds that hostages start to sympathise with their captors.

October 3

Irish Republican Army terrorists kidnap Dutch industrialist Teide Herrema in Dublin, Ireland, after a month long hunt the Irish police surrounded the terrorists hide out, forcing his release.

October 4

Left wing First of October Anti-Fascist Resistance Group (GRAPO) terrorists murder four Spanish policemen after the execution of five members of the group in Spanish custody.

November 27

British publisher Ross McWhirter shot by Irish Republican Army terrorists at his home London, England, after offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of terrorist bombers.

December 2

South Moluccan terrorists seize train at Beilen, Netherlands, for twelve days. Three hostages were shot before the terrorists surrendered.

December 4

Seven South Moluccan terrorist seize the Indonesian embassy in Amsterdam, Netherlands, beginning a two week long siege. One of the thirty six hostages died jumping from a window to escape the terrorists.

December 6

Four Irish Republican Army terrorists seize two hostages in Balcombe Street, London, England for six days before surrendering to police; hostages released unharmed.

December 21

Top international terrorist, Carlos "The Jackal" holds eleven oil ministers and fifty nine civilians hostage during the OPEC meeting in Vienna, Austria. After flying to Algeria and taking delivery of several hundred million dollars in ransom money, Carlos and his Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terrorists escape.

1976

June 27

An Air France airliner is hijacked by a joint German Baader-Meinhof/Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terrorist group and its crew are forced to fly to Entebbe airport in Uganda. Some two hundred and fifty eight passengers and crew are held hostage but all non-Israeli passengers are eventually released. On 4 July Israeli commandos fly to Uganda and rescue the remaining hostages. All the terrorists were killed in the rescue, as are three passengers and one commando.

July 21

British ambassador to Irish Republic Christopher Ewart Briggs killed when Irish Republic Army landmine destroys his car near Dublin, Ireland.

August 11

Airliner hijacked at Larnica, Cyprus, airport by Arab terrorist who had just murdered a leading Egyptian publisher at a nearby hotel. After being refused permission to land at a number of Arab capitals the hijacker return to Larnica. Egyptian commandos land and try to attack the plane but end up in gun battle with Cypriot troops. Fifteen Egyptian troops, seven Cypriot soldiers and a German cameraman are killed.

A nine strong Al Fatah Palestinian seaborne raiding party lands in Israel and hijacks a bus, killing twenty six civilians and wounding seventy. All the terrorists are killed by Israeli security forces. The Israelis retaliate by invading southern Lebanon, under codename Operation Litani.

Iranian radicals seize the US Embassy in Tehran, taking sixty-six American diplomats hostage. The crisis continues until 20 January 1981 when the hostages are released by diplomatic means. A US rescue effort led by the Delta Force counter terrorist unit failed on 25 April 1980 when a Marine Corps CH-53 helicopter crashed into a USAF C-130 transport aircraft at forward refueling site in central Iran, killing eight Americans and injuring five.

The Israeli ambassador in London, England, Shlomo Argov, shot and seriously injured by terrorists from the Abu Nidal group. The attack is used to justify the Israeli invasion of Lebanon that started immediately after the attack.

July 2

A professor is injured in a bomb attack at the University of California, Berkley, United States, which is attributed to the so-called Unabomber.

July 20

Four Household Cavalry soldiers and seven horses are killed when the Irish Republican Army explodes a bomb in Hyde Park, London, England. Two hours later another bomb explodes under a band stand in Regent Park killing another seven soldiers. Some fifty one people were injured in the two incidents.
September 14

Lebanese President Bashir Gemayel assassinated by a massive car bomb at a Beirut political meeting, by a pro-Syrian Lebanese group. Scores of civilians were injured in the blast. Two days later with the support of Israeli defence minister Arial Sharon, Phalange Christian militiamen occupy the Sabra/Shatilla Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut Lebanon and start to massacre civilians in revenge for the death of Gemayel. Some four hundred and sixty men, women and children were killed in that attack that took place while nearby Israeli troops watched.

Sixty three people, including the CIA's Middle East Director, are killed and 120 injured in a 400 lb suicide truck bomb attack on the US Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. The driver is killed. Responsibility is claimed by Islamic Jihad.

Eight people killed and fifty five injured when a suitcase bomb explodes near check in desk at Orly airport, Paris, France. Armenian terrorists are later arrested by French security forces for the attack.

July 27

Armenian terrorists seize the Turkish embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, taking the staff hostage. Five terrorists, a Portuguese policemen and Turkish women are killed when a terrorist bomb prematurely explodes.

The Martyr's Mausoleum bombing in Rangoon, Burma, leaves five South Korean cabinet ministers and fifteen other people dead. South Korea's President Chun survives the attack which is blamed on North Korean intelligence agents.

Italian right wing terrorists explode a bomb on a train killing fifteen people and injuring one hundred and fifteen.

Simultaneous suicide truck bombs on American and French compounds in Beirut, Lebanon. A 12,000 lb bomb destroys a US Marine Corps base killing two hundred and forty one Americans; another fifty eight Frenchmen are killed when a 400 lb device destroys one of their bases. Islamic Jihad claims responsibility. US and French aircraft strike suspected terrorist bases in the Baka'a valley in retaliation.

Twenty eight Israeli soldiers, along with thirty Palestinian and Lebanese civilians are killed in another suicide truck bomb attack on the Israeli military headquarters in Tyre, in southern Lebanon.

US Naval officer shot by November 17 terrorist group in Athens, Greece, when his car stopped at traffic lights.

December 12

US Embassy in Kuwait was targeted by Iranian backed Iraqi Shia terrorist who attempted to destroy the building with a truck bomb. The attack was foiled by guards and the device exploded in the Embassy fore-court killing five people.

The climax of an Irish Republican Army Christmas bombing campaign in London, England, saw two policemen and three civilians killed during an car bomb attack on Harrods department store.

US Army Brigadier General James Dozier kidnapped from his home in Verona, Italy, by Italian Red Brigades terrorists. He was held for forty five days until Italian special forces rescued him on 26 January 1982.

Car bomb in Beirut, Lebanon, kills eighty and wounds more than two hundred civilians, in what is believed to have been a American CIA backed attempt to kill the leader of the Hezbollah terrorist group.

CIA station chief in Beirut, Lebanon, William Buckley, kidnapped by the Iranian backed Islamic Jihad. He was tortured and then executed by his captors.

April 12

Eighteen US servicemen killed and eighty three people injured in bomb attack on restaurant near USAF base in Torrejon, Spain. Responsibility claimed by Hezbollah as revenge for March bombing in Beirut.

April 17

British security forces including Special Air Service counter-terrorist troops lay siege to Libyan People's Bureau (embassy) in London after a British policewomen is killed by small arms fire originating from inside the building. After threats were made to UK citizens living in Libya, the British government decided to respect the diplomatic immunity of the staff of the People's Bureau and allowed them to leave for Tripoli. No one was arrested for the murder.

April 22

Four Palestinian terrorist hijack bus carrying Israelis in Gaza, occupied territories. Israeli special forces storm the bus and kill two of the terrorist after they had been captured.

Sikh terrorists seize the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India; hundreds die after the holy shrine is retaken by Indian security forces.

August 2

Tamil Tiger terrorists blow up Madras airport terminal, India, killing thirty people and injuring twenty four more. The bomb was intended to blow up a Sri Lankan airliner.

September 20

Suicide bomb attack on US Embassy in East Beirut kills twenty three people and injures twenty one others. The US and British ambassadors were slightly injured in the explosion which was attributed to the Iranian backed Hezbollah group.

October 12

British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet escape death during an Irish Republican Army bomb attack on the Grand Hotel, Brighton, England, during the Conservative Party Congress. Five people killed and thirty injured in the attack which destroyed the front of the hotel.

October 31

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is gunned down by her own Sikh bodyguards in Dehli, India. Almost three thousand people die in riots that follow Gandhi's assassination.

December 4

Kuwaiti airliner hijacked en-route to Pakistan from Dubai by Iranian backed Iraqi Shia terrorists. The aircraft was forced to land in the Iranian capital, Tehran, after two Americans had been killed. The terrorists surrendered to the Iranian authorities and are later released.

1985

January 15

General Rene Audan, head of French international arms sales, shot dead at his home in Paris France by terrorists from the Action-Directe-Red Army Faction, pan-European radical group, linked to the German Baader-Meinhof gang. Two weeks later Industrialist Ernst Zimmerman and his wife murdered in their home, in Munich, Germany, by Red Army Faction terrorists.

US journalist Terry Anderson is kidnapped in Beirut, Lebanon, by Iranian backed Islamic radicals. He is finally released in December 1991.

Bomb explodes outside Hezbollah headquarters in Beirut killing 80 people. CIA backed Christians are blamed.

May 15

One person injured in bomb explosion in a computer room at the University of California, Berkeley. The so-called Unabomber is held responsible. On 13 July the Unabomber sent another device by post to Boeing aircraft company headquarters, Washington state, United States.

African National Congress bombs air force headquarters in Pretoria, South Africa, killing nineteen civilians and injuring more than two hundred people.

June 6

Red Army Faction bomb explodes at Frankfurt Airport, Germany, killing three people. A TWA Boeing 727 was hijacked enroute to Rome, Italy, from Athens, Greece, by two Lebanese Hezbollah terrorists and forced to fly to Beirut, Lebanon. The eight crews and one hundred and forty five passengers were then held for seventeen days, during which one American hostage was murdered. After being flown twice to Algiers, on the aircraft's return to Beirut the hostages were released after the US Government pressured the Israelis to release four hundred and thirty five Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners.

June 9

US academic, Thomas Sutherland, at the American University, Beirut, Lebanon kidnapped by Islamic terrorists and held until 18 November 1991.

June 23

Air India Boeing 747 is destroyed by a bomb over the Atlantic, killing all three hundred and twenty nine people aboard the aircraft. Sikh terrorists are blamed for the attack, which is the worse single terrorist incident to date. Two cargo handlers killed at Tokyo airport when another Sikh bomb explodes in an Air Canada aircraft en-route to India.

July 10

French DSGE secret agents plant bomb on Green Peace ship Rainbow Warrior in Auckland harbour, New Zealand that kills one protest group member.

August 8

Three US servicemen and seventeen injured in Red Army Faction bomb and gun attack on Rhein-Main airbase, Germany.

September 25

Palestine Liberation Organisation Force 17 commando squad kills three Israeli tourists aboard at yacht in Larnica marina, Cyprus. The three strong group, including Briton Ian Davidson, are imprisoned by the Cypriots.

September 30

Four Soviet diplomats kidnapped in Beirut, Lebanon by Islamic Liberation Organisation, which was thought to be a front for the Iranian backed Hezbollah. One of the Russians was killed but the other three were released unharmed after a relative of the terrorist group's leaders was kidnapped and killed by the Soviet KGB.

October 7

Four Palestinian Liberation Front terrorists seize the Italian cruise liner, Achille Lauro, during a cruise in the eastern Mediterranean, taking more than seven hundred people hostage. One US passenger was murdered before the Egyptian Government offered the terrorists safe haven in return for the hostages' freedom. US Navy fighters incepted the Egyptian aircraft flying the terrorists to safety in Tunis and forced it to land at the NATO airbase in Italy, where the terrorists were arrested. The Italian authorities however let two of the terrorists leaders escape on diplomatic passports.

Senior government official Gerold von Braunmuhl, shot at his home in Bonn, Germany, by Red Army Faction terrorists.

Two hurt in alleged Unabomber attack on the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, United States. A month later a computer store owner is killed in another Unabomber attack in Sacramento, California, United States.

November 13

Palace of Justice in Bogota, Colombia, seized by left wing M-19 terrorists and one hundred hostages taken, including a number of judges. All the terrorists and most of the hostages killed when the Colombian army stormed the building.

Ninety eight passengers and crew of an Egyptair aircraft are held hostage by Palestinian terrorists at Luqa, Malta. Five passengers were shot by the terrorists and two died. An ill-planned assault by Egyptian Force 777 commandos resulted in some fifty seven passengers being killed when the terrorists set off explosives in the aircraft.

Two US soldiers are killed and seventy nine American servicemen are wounded in Libyan bomb attack on a night club in West Berlin, Germany. Ten days later US Air Force and Navy jets bomb targets in Libya in reprisal for the raids, hitting targets in Tripoli and Benghazi. One USAF F-111 is shot down in the raid killing its two crew. Some ninety three Libya civilians are killed in raids. Three British hostages held by Islamic groups in the Lebanon are killed in response to the raid.

British television journalist John McCarthy seized in Beirut by Iranian backed terrorist and held hostage with a large group of other westerners until 8 August 1991.

Cargese holiday camp, Corsica, seized by separatist rebels, who kill two hostages and injure three.

American citizens Jesse Turner and Alann Steen seized in Beirut by Islamic terrorists. Turner was held until 22 October 1991 and Steen is released on 3 December 1991.

Three Irish Republican Army terrorists preparing to explode a bomb in the British colony of Gibralter are ambushed and killed by undercover British Army soldiers.

March 16

During the funeral in Belfast, Northern Ireland, of the three Irish terrorists killed in Gibralter, an Ulster protestant, Michael Stone, throws hand grenades and opens fire on mourners killing three and wounding fifty. Four days later two British soldiers are dragged from a car in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during an Irish Republican Army funeral procession, beaten and then shot at point blank range.

Four thousand Kurdish civilians killed during Iraqi nerve gas attack against Halabja in northern Iraq, after Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein ordered weapons to be used to put down Kurdish revolt against rule from Baghdad.

April 5

One hundred and twenty two people were held hostage after a Kuwaiti Boeing 747 was hijacked and diverted to Mashad, Iran, before flying on to Cyprus. The Kuwait Government refused requests by the Iranian backed Shia hijackers to release 17 convicted terrorists. After 15 days the hijackers were granted asylum in Algeria and released their hostages unharmed.

Six British soldiers killed during a charity sports run in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, by Irish Republican Army bomb. On 1 August Mill Hill British Army base in London, England, bombed by Irish Republican Army. Eight British soldiers killed and 27 injured when Irish Republican Army blew up their bus carrying them to their barracks in Tyrone, Northern Ireland, later in August.

US Naval Attache killed in Athens, Greece, by Nov 17th terrorist group.

Pakistan president Zia Al Haq and US ambassador are killed, along with thirty seven other people, when a bomb explodes on a C-130 Hercules aircraft just after take off from Bahawalpu, Pakistan.

December 21

Pan Am Boeing 747 blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland, by a bomb believed to have been placed on the aircraft at Frankfurt Airport, Germany. All 259 people on the aircraft were killed by the blast which has been attributed to a number of Middle Eastern terrorist groups. Two Libyan intelligence operatives are being tried in connection with this attack.

May 12

British World War Two veteran Jackie Mann seized by Iranian backed terrorists in Beirut, Lebanon, and held until 23 September 1991. Four days latter German aid workers Heinrich Struebig and Thomas Kemptner were also kidnapped in the Lebanon by Islamic terrorists and held until June 1992. They were the last of some 80 westerners held hostage in Lebanon to be released.

Twelve civilians killed and thousands injured in a Sarin nerve gas attack on the Kasumigaski subway station in the centre of Tokyo, Japan. The Aum Shinrikyo cult were blamed for the attack which involved placing gas containers in subway stations and trains. A major police clamp down on the cult followed the attack with its leader Shoko Asahara being arrested two months later. The previous June seven people died and one hundred and fifty were injured in a gas attack in Matsumoto, Japan, also perpetrated by the Aum. In that attack, the gas was sprayed from tanks in a van in an attempt to assassinate a judge. Subsequent investigation identified the gas as Sarin nerve agent.

Federal Building in Oklahoma City, United States, totally destroyed by massive truck bomb killing 166 people and injuring hundreds more. Rightwing extremists Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nicholson arrested for the largest terrorist attack in modern American history.

The third and final victim of the Unabomber, a lumber lobbyist, is killed in Sacramento, United States. On 4 April 1996, Theodore J. Kaczynski is finally arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation under suspicion of being the so-called Unabomber. In total three people were killed and 23 wounded in the 16 bombings attributed to Kaczynski since 1978.

Hundreds killed and most of the Chechens escape. Other Chechen rebels seize a ship in Turkey, taking 118 Russians and 4 Turks hostage before they surrendered to the Turkish authorities. Police marksmen shoot dead IRA member Diatmuid O'Neill in the raid and arrest five other people.
