Selected Internet resources:
Meteorology: one site that is excellent is ISCCP research publications.
You can click on http://isccp.giss.nasa.gov/research.html
Another site that is excellent is NOAA/CDC Satellite Research Publications
site. http://www1.etl.noaa.gov/climsat/publications.html
These sites I have mentioned all have publication citations that can be
used to access journal articles. Another site is Meteorology Pathfinder,
http://members.aol.com/gnsharkfan/meteor.html.
This site is compiled by Gary Ciszewski, a librarian at the University
of Buffalo. The site is meant for the University of Buffalo student but
others can find useful items here. There is a great set of Library of Congress
Subject Headings related to Meteorology. There is a list of journals and
abstracts that can be accessed on line such as the American Meteorological
Society. Online Journal. There are quick links to National Weather Agencies. There is a good list of books available at UB that Buley either has or
can get through Interlibrary Loan. The databases on this site are for UB
students only and require a password.
Remote sensing http://www.vtt.fi/aut/rs/virtual/
This database is named The World-Wide Web Virtual Library: remote sensing.
It was created by Seppo Vaatainen, a member of the Technical Center of
Finland's Remote Sensing Group. The information is well organized in outline
format. There are no unnecessary graphics. The database is updated monthly.
This site was rated by Choice as one of the best-constructed virtual libraries
ever used. I checked it out it really is good. Journal article citations
can be found along with lots of other remote-sensing specific information.
Earthquake information http://neic.usgs.gov/
This database is a wealth of information on the location and size of most
earthquakes that occur worldwide. The information is supplied by the National
Earthquake Information Center (NEIC). The data that is collected by the
NEIC are published in a variety of formats and a lot of the information
is available through its Web site. The site gives more than 10,000 seismograph
station codes and coordinates. There is a near real-time earthquake list.
This site is useful for upper-division undergraduates through professionals.
Bridge: Ocean Sciences Education Teacher Resource Center http://www.vims.edu/bridge/
This site has a lot of educational resources for teachers of earth science
in middle and high schools. It would be very useful for students planning
to become earth science teachers. It covers the field of oceanography.
The site was compiled by Lisa Ayers Lawrence, a marine education specialist
at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
Natural Resources
Research Information Pages (NRRIPS) This site is intended
to be an internet resource guide for researchers, practitioners and students
in the natural resources field. It was compiled by Yu-Fai Leung at the
Department of Forestry, Virginia Tech. This site is good for bibliographies
in envirometal science. The site does not do much evaluation of the sources
but it has a very good guide design and the site's organization is excellent.
I wouldn't look here for journal articles, though.
Tides and Tide Prediction
This resource directory links to online tide predictors, tide observations/sea
level measurements, tide prediction software you install to generate tide
predictions on demand, and general information on tides and tide prediction.
The site was compiled by Peter Brueggeman, Director of the Scripps Institution
of Oceanography Library. It is an excellent site. When I tried to get the
prediction for New Haven, Ct., I put in the name New Haven, Conn and got
nothing. You have to put in only New Haven. You also have to select a region
(in this case - New England).
The
Worldwide Soil Jumpstation This site was compiled by Fred Moor (fred.moor@which.net)
This site is enormous. There are links arranged by soil-physical with links
to soil composition pages, geology and soil mapping, soil classification,
soil formation and composition, soil texture and structure, soil and organic
matter and soil analysis and testing. There are other links to soil-chemistry,
soil-biology, soil-management-soil-various and soil-organisations. Under
soil- physical I found papers done by students for a geology of soils class
in 1996. Anything you want to find out about soil science you should be
able to find at this website. A couple of the links were dead but overall
it seemed very good.
Stratigraphy/Sedimentation
Pathfinder This site was compiled by Gary R. Ciszewski Librarian
at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has another pathfinder
site I mentioned earlier on meteorology. I found no dead links at this
site. I didn't find journal citations but there was some very good information
at this site. The online databases at this site are for UB students only.
There is a list of library of Congress Subject headings for stratigraphy
at this site which is very helpful.
Mineralogy
and Petrology Research on the Web This is an excellent site with links
to journal abstracts like the American Mineralogist and the contents and
abstracts of the American Journal of Science.
Soils
Online Interesting site. I found a bibliography of the literature on
Podzols/Spodosols with 750 articles listed. Abstracts and Table of Contents
to some of the journals listed had some dead links.
Biome This is a large site but one
I found useful for information on soil science. To get to soil science
information you had to click on agrifor on the biome home page.
