Political Science Internships

Political Science students are able to intern in a variety of offices and agencies. From nonprofit, government to law firms, many majors, minors and graduate students gain insightful experiences through our internship programs.

A number of students have worked for local congressional officials including U.S. Reps. Rosa DeLauro, Jim Himes and U.S. Senators Dick Blumenthal and Chris Murphy. Some have interned for the state Democrat and Republican parties as well as local party committees while others have worked for the public defender’s office and law offices. Nonprofit organizations like Yankee Institute and Integrated Refugee and Immigration Services are popular as well. Several students have interned for their city halls including New Haven’s, serving in offices like Economic Development, City Planning, and Taxes.

Students must register with the department for internships classes two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. Any questions about registration or internships, please contact Dr. Patricia Olney at OlneyP1@southernct.edu.

Internship Opportunities

Connecticut General Assembly

Every spring semester, several students intern with the Connecticut General Assembly in Hartford. While interns do not have to be political science majors to be considered for this internship program, they must complete an application process and November 1st is the deadline. Please see their website.

DePino, Nuñez & Biggs
Melissa Biggs, a Southern political science graduate, has created an internship with her firm, DePino, Nuñez & Biggs.  The New Haven firm does government relations lobbying. The internship is available each spring for students wishing to observe experienced lobbyists in various aspects of government relations. This internship is ideal for students who may be interested in pursuing a career in government relations, the legal field, or are preparing for law school. Internship information may be found here. If interested, please contact Dr. Patricia Olney at OlneyP1@southernct.edu
