welcome to the urban studies program

student pointing to mapThe Urban Studies Program, in the Geography Department, equips students with the tools and techniques of urban policy and planning.  Students examine aspects of cultural diversity, neighborhood conflicts, density and growth, community-level collaboration, and various positive responses to the ebb and flow of population changes within urban areas.

The approach of this multi-disciplinary program provides students with a systematic, critical overview of contested ideas, concepts, principles, and practices, which are relevant to the understanding and promotion of co-existence and social justice in an increasingly diverse urban context. The program is designed to enable students to evaluate and integrate knowledge, skills, values, and ethics, and to prepare for further scholarship, or careers involving critical thinking, and leadership skills.
