Foreign Language TEAching Certification Program
The department is very proud of its foreign language teacher development program. Connecticut state certification is rigorous, but is rewarded with salaries higher than national averages and recognition in most U.S. states. Language teachers at schools throughout Connecticut have received their initial teacher training at SCSU, and its graduates are eagerly sought by schools throughout the state. We certify teachers in French, German, Italian, and Spanish at the elementary and secondary levels.
There are several routes to certification:
- Undergraduates interested in FL teaching certification should pursue a major in the language they want to teach and complete required coursework in education.
- Graduates who wish to add a FLT Certification to their main certification in another field should pursue cross-endorsement.(See the Connecticut State Department of Education website at www.sde.ct.gov).
- Individuals holding an undergraduate degree in another field should pursue our graduate FLT certification program.
- Individuals currently employed in Connecticut with a Durational Shortage Application Permit (DSAPs) should pursue our DSAP certification program.
