Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) seeks a passionate and committed leader to serve as Director of New Student and Sophomore Programs. Founded as a teachers college in 1893, Southern has evolved over the past century into a comprehensive university offering 114 graduate and undergraduate programs in the liberal arts and professional disciplines. It is one of four universities in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System. The University is located in New Haven, a city rich with arts and culture, and less than 90 miles from New York City and 140 miles from Boston.


Southern has recently completed a study of student success and is in the process of developing a ten-year strategic plan. With new leadership across the University, it is an exciting time to join the SCSU community. A brand new position, the Director of New Student and Sophomore Programs will design, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive program to support the out-of-class experience for first-year, second-year and transfer students. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs and working with critical partners across campus, the Director will develop an integrated transition experience for first-year and transfer students to support their initial year at Southern. Additionally, the Director will provide leadership for the development and implementation of a sophomore-year experience program to build students' success in their second year. He/she will also supervise the Office of Veteran and Military Services.


A masters degree and at least five years of experience in new student programs, sophomore success, student retention, student success, or related work are required. The Director must have demonstrated expertise and proven experience with students in transition and be student-centered, self-initiated, innovative, and results-driven. The ideal candidate will be familiar with the changing demographics of current and future students; have demonstrated success in providing leadership for retention initiatives; understand barriers that impede students' progress to graduation; have created effective solutions to address critical problems; and, value diversity of thought, experience, and background. He/she must have significant experience working collaboratively across campus and have a team orientation. The Director must have strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and be an effective communicator, both orally and in writing, with students, faculty, staff, parents, and other stakeholders.
