Who Is My Advisor?
All Southern students have an Assigned Advisor and the ability to meet with an Advising Specialist
Assigned Advisor
Your Assigned Advisor is based on where you are in your academic journey:
During Your First Semester: You are advised by your INQ 101 instructor during your first semester only. This advisor will help you navigate your first semester at Southern and meet with you to discuss courses for your second semester. You can find helpful advising resources and materials on the FYE Advising page.
You will receive their contact information on the first day of your INQ class (if not slightly before). They will also let you know how to schedule an appointment if you'd like to meet individually. You can also look up their contact information by using the Southern Directory.
After Your First Semester: If you have a declared major, you will be assigned to a new academic advisor within your major department by the start of your second semester. If you are Exploratory, you will be assigned to an Advising Specialist in the Department of Academic Advising. At the start of your second semester, you can check the top section of your Degree Evaluation to see who your new advisor is. If you do not see someone listed at that time, please contact the Department Chair of your major department.
You are advised by an assigned faculty or staff member within your academic department. This advisor is your go-to person for all things within your major, including course registration.
Check the top section of your Degree Evaluation to see who your advisor is. If you do not see someone listed at that time, please contact the Department Chair of your major department. Once you have their name, you can look up their contact information by using the Southern Directory. If you are unable to get in touch with your advisor, please contact the Department Chair of your major department.
You are advised by the Exploratory Advising Specialist or the Advising Specialist aligned with your area of interest. This advisor will support you through your major exploration process and help you choose the appropriate courses to keep you on track to earn your degree.
