Digital New Haven

City of Elms is the course website associated with HIS259: Digital New Haven and other departmental courses examining New Haven's past from pre-contact indigenous history to the present and focusing on the rich and diverse experience of the many people who have inhabited the spaces, waters, and neighborhoods that have come to constitute the city. Through it, students learn not only about how local history intersects with larger state, regional, national, and global historical currents, but also about the philosophy and methodology of digital history and the promise and peril of computers and the internet as research tools and forums for historical research. Finally, the website seeks to engage the public, particularly New Haveners and those interested in the city's history, on questions of diversity, tolerance, and social justice, principles at the heart of Southern's mission. An iterative project, City of Elms is always changing and adding content, so please check back regularly.
