The Academic Laboratory Specialist is responsible for maintaining the department’s laboratories and support facilities. Responsible for maintaining an appropriate inventory of supplies and ensuring a proper maintenance schedule for equipment. Prepares laboratories for instructional use and manages hazardous waste generated by department research and teaching activities.
Position Responsibilities:
Assists the Chairperson with purchasing of laboratory supplies and equipment, oversight of supply budgets, approving and processing invoices for payment. Prepares service contracts for laboratory and other department equipment, and performs minor repairs as needed.
Responsible for the preparation, setup, and clean-up of class laboratory sessions in coordination with faculty.
Maintains the department’s equipment, systems, instruments, and computers, establishing a routine maintenance schedule and arranging for repair services with vendors. Submits work orders to Facilities Management as appropriate.
Maintains inventory of all chemicals in the academic department purchased, stored, and disposed of, in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and in coordination with the university Department of Environmental Health and Safety, where applicable.
Assists in the preparation and editing of laboratory manuals for lab courses.
Works with Information Technology to support and update lab software systems.
May provide assistance in the use of laboratory equipment to graduate-level lab courses.
Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those above, which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, biomedical sciences, or a closely related field and three (3) years of experience in laboratory operations or management. Master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline preferred. Strong understanding of lab safety practices, chemical handling and hazardous materials management. Excellent organizational skills and technical proficiency in lab equipment and inventory systems. Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to supervise student workers and collaborate with faculty. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and contribute positively to the university community. Credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above may be considered.
