University Assistant – Fiscal Affairs (Accounting)

This is a temporary, part-time position, which may be renewed at the discretion of the University.   

Hours/Week:  19 hours per week.  The UA is expected to work 19 hours per week.  The exact schedule will be established between the Supervisor and the successful applicant to meet the needs of the department.

Department Description

Finance and Administration Division serves SCSU's student-centered mission by providing the highest quality service to all students, faculty, and staff through our business practices and management of the university's resources and infrastructure in a transparent, customer-focused, and team-driven, collaborative manner.

Position Summary:

The University Assistant provides Accounting support to the Director of Accounting Services and Controller.  The position assists with financial transactions, reconciliations , journal entries, general recordkeeping and reporting.

Specific Duties:

  • Assists with the preparation and entry of journal entries
  • Maintains and updates accounting records and files
  • Reviews documentation for completeness and accuracy
  • Assists with creating standard operating procedures
  • Reconciles accounts and identifies and investigates discrepancies
  • Compiles financial data and assists in preparing financial reports
  • Utilizes financial and administrative systems to enter and retrieve data
  • Provides general support to the Accounting Office, including responding to inquiries and assisting with special projects

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of accounting principles and procedures
  • Ability to perform detailed work with accuracy
  • Ability to organize records and maintain confidentiality
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets and financial systems
  • Ability to follow procedures and experience in creating new procedures preferred

Preferred Qualifications, Experience, Requirements:  

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting or related field
  • Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills
  • Experience using financial systems (Banner preferred)
  • Strong computer skills and ability to handle strictly confidential information.
  • Experience in Higher education preferred but not required.
