Important

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has undertaken a review of its award portfolio. Each award was carefully and individually reviewed, and the agency has determined that termination of certain awards is necessary because they are not in alignment with current NSF priorities.

Effective immediately, this program has been cancelled.

NSF is issuing this termination to protect the interests of the government pursuant to NSF Grant General Conditions (GC-1) term and condition entitled 'Termination and Enforcement,' on the basis that they no longer effectuate the program goals or agency priorities. This is the final agency decision and not subject to appeal.

Key components of the program

  • Two-week Residential Summer Bridge Program (tentative dates August 10-21, 2025)
  • First-year learning community
  • First-year seminar series
  • Peer mentors and faculty research mentors
  • Project-based learning
  • Two-week Research Summer Institute (prior to second year enrollment)

Financial benefits of the program

  • Paid two-week Residential Summer Bridge Program ($1000.00 stipend)
  • Paid two-week Research Summer Institute ($2000.00 stipend)

Other benefits of the program

  • Targeted instruction in math during the Summer Bridge Program
  • Early research experience
  • Creating a sense of belonging and self-identity in STEM
  • Strengthening academic success skills and growth mindset skills
  • Providing opportunities for internships, networking, graduate studies, and careers in STEM

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Incoming fall 2025 first-year students enrolled full-time at Southern in one of the STEM disciplines (as defined by the National Science Foundation): Biology (excluding pre-med), Chemistry (excluding pre-health), Coastal and Marine Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Earth Science, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Physics, Psychology (B.S. majors)
  2. Students must be either a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident of the USA

Anyone is welcome to apply to the program; however, we will be evaluating applications based on meeting the NSF’s overall goal of the program, which “is to assist universities and colleges in diversifying the nation's science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce by increasing the number of STEM baccalaureate and graduate degrees awarded to populations historically underrepresented in these disciplines: African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Native Pacific Islanders.
