The Elementary Education, B.S. program is for undergraduate students who wish to become elementary educators. Students advance their knowledge of teaching, curriculum, educational theory, educational supervision, and more, and graduate prepared to meet the challenges facing the ever-evolving field of education.
The program prepares them to receive their State of Connecticut teaching certification (Connecticut Initial Educators Certificate) to teach in grades one through six. There are opportunities throughout the program for students to get real-world experience through field placement observations. The culminating experience is a semester-long student teaching placement in an elementary school. Students also double major in Liberal Studies, which is comprised of two “report-card subjects” such as English and mathematics.
This program is intended for undergraduate students seeking initial certification in elementary education along with an additional endorsement in bilingual education. Throughout the program, students have opportunities to gain real-world experience through field placement observations. The culminating experience is a semester-long student teaching placement in a bilingual classroom.
Students also complete a double major in Liberal Studies, which includes a concentration in English and a concentration in Spanish.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment of kindergarten and elementary school teachers is projected to grow by four percent. Rising student enrollment should increase demand for kindergarten and elementary teachers. The number of students enrolling in public kindergarten and elementary schools is expected to increase over the coming decade, and the number of classes needed to accommodate these students should rise. As a result, more teachers will be needed to teach public kindergarten and elementary school students.
