Mathematics plays a central role in many fields, from science to computer programming, from finance to economics. It is a critical component in an extensive spectrum of fields. Southern's mathematics certification program is nationally recognized by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
The Mathematics department seeks to expose all students to the joy of doing mathematics and to broaden their view of the many uses and societal importance of mathematics.
Along the way, we will provide a bountiful opportunity for you to explore your individual interests. We will offer independent study, special topics courses, internships, and thesis guidance as avenues for intellectual growth. Further engagement is provided through a vibrant community of math enthusiasts participating in one or more of the many group activities sponsored by the Mathematics Department.
Concentrations
Mathematics, B.S. - Applied
Our Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics provides preparation in classical applied subjects such as differential equations and math modeling. It is the perfect choice for students interested in the mathematics behind fields such as engineering, physics, chemistry, meteorology, and a host of other sciences. A Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics is excellent preparation for beginning a career in a wide range of industries, including materials science, computer animation, and epidemiology; statistics, meteorology, and engineering; cryptography, logistics, and fraud investigation.
Mathematics, B.S. - Pure
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a Pure Concentration is often pursued by students who want to have the flexibility to choose most of their upper-level mathematics courses. Students who intend to go to graduate school in theoretical mathematics often pick this concentration so that they can strengthen their proof-writing skills in math electives such as abstract algebra, analysis, geometry, and topology. The flexibility of the pure concentration can also be ideal for a transfer student who has taken upper-level math courses at another university.
Mathematics, B.S. - Statistics
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a concentration in Statistics prepares students to use mathematical and statistical reasoning to analyze data, solve complex problems, and make informed decisions. Students build a strong foundation in mathematics, probability, statistical theory, and modern data science methods through a curriculum that combines core coursework with advanced statistics courses and specialized electives. The program also develops practical computational and data-analysis skills that are increasingly important across industries. Graduates are prepared for careers in data analytics, actuarial science, quantitative research, and related technical fields, as well as for graduate study in statistics, data science, mathematics, and other quantitative disciplines.
Mathematics, B.S. - Teacher Certification
Our Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a concentration in Teacher Certification prepares students to become knowledgeable, thoughtful, and reflective secondary mathematics teachers. Students develop a broad and rigorous foundation in mathematics while exploring connections between advanced mathematical ideas and the concepts they will teach. Coursework in mathematics teaching methods, educational technology, and supporting diverse learners helps students make mathematics accessible and engaging. Through student teaching and an accompanying seminar, students put their learning into practice as they prepare to pursue Connecticut teacher certification and help the next generation develop mathematical understanding and confidence.
Beyond the Classroom
Students have the opportunity to supplement their small, close-knit classes by joining our biweekly Math Club meetings or weekly problem-solving seminars. They can compete on a team in math modeling, individually in the Putnam Exam, or in regional competitions. Students also attend or present at local and national math conferences, participate in national and international competitions, and engage in research with math department faculty.
