The Nursing program at Southern Connecticut State University was established in 1969. The undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program offers three curricula: a traditional four-year program, an Accelerated Career Entry (ACE) program for individuals holding a BA/BS degree in another field, and a flexible RN-BS program designed for registered nurses from associate's degree and diploma programs. The degree requirements for a BSN degree include 120 credits. Upon completion of the baccalaureate program, students become eligible to take the NCLEX licensing examination for registered nurses.
The educational environment promotes an attitude of inquiry and critical thinking where ideas are generated, assumptions questioned, solutions created, and the art of investigation prized. Learning is a shared experience with responsibility for learning vested in the student, with the faculty serving as facilitators to the process.
The prestigious nursing major at Southern is one of the top-selected majors. Southern has more than 150 clinical agency partners across the state of Connecticut in areas such as acute-care facilities, rehabilitation settings, hospital settings, home-care agencies, outpatient clinics, and long-term care. Alumni from Southern’s nursing programs are readily recruited by employers, including Yale-New Haven Health System, which has hired Southern alumni as a large percentage of their professional RN staff.
Our learning environment promotes critical thinking, inquiry, and collaboration, empowering students to question assumptions, generate solutions, and deliver safe, compassionate care to diverse populations.

Designed as an upper-division major, this program requires a strong liberal arts and science base as a prerequisite to nursing courses. Students are prepared to incorporate professional standards to provide safe, evidence-based, and compassionate care of the highest quality to diverse populations. Theory courses and hospital- and community-based clinical practice courses provide students with a comprehensive foundation in nursing. Full-time and limited part-time study options are available.
RNs who hold an associate's degree or diploma in nursing receive individualized attention as they proceed through this flexible nursing program. The program takes into account the rich experience of the RN in terms of clinical and classroom settings, building upon their knowledge and experience in the field, and increasing their credentials and skills. Nursing courses are offered online; most courses are offered in an 8-week format.
This intensive, accelerated career entry (ACE) program is designed for students who hold a BS/BA from an accredited college or university and who wish to change careers and enter the nursing profession.
Nurses play a vital role in the healthcare system. They are advocates, caregivers, and innovators, and they are needed now more than ever. Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow by 15 percent through 2026.
The School of Nursing has an established chapter of the Mu Beta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. The chapter is active on a local, regional, and international level. Select students with superior academic achievement and leadership potential are invited to membership during their nursing studies.
Students in the School have the opportunity to become involved with the school's chapter of the National Student Nurses Association, SCSU Multicultural Health Leaders, and the American Association for Men in Nursing. Students are encouraged to join these organizations during their studies in order to increase their awareness of nursing and broader healthcare issues.
