Earn your advanced degree in reading through our flexible and affordable programs. As the largest teacher preparation program in the state, Southern plays a leading role in educator preparation and professional development.
Candidates for the M.S. in Reading are already certified teachers (in areas such as elementary education, special education, or grades 7–12 social studies, English, etc.) who seek to deepen their professional knowledge and practice in reading for students in grades 1–12. A Master of Science degree in Reading leads to eligibility for certification as a Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts Specialist (102).
Our candidates build on their teaching expertise by studying typical and atypical literacy development, best practices in intervention, and instruction for students with learning difficulties or disabilities—including dyslexia. Coursework also addresses discipline-specific literacies and the literacy acquisition of English learners.
A Master of Science degree in remedial reading and language arts prepares graduates for specialized careers in literacy education. They may become reading specialists, literacy coaches, interventionists, or remedial reading teachers in K–12 schools. These roles focus on supporting students who struggle with reading and writing, often through individualized or small-group instruction. Graduates may also work as curriculum developers or instructional coordinators, designing effective literacy programs. Some pursue roles in adult education, tutoring services, or educational publishing. This degree also supports those seeking reading certification or aiming for leadership positions in literacy and language development.
Accredited by the International Literacy Association and the International Dyslexia Association.
