The B.S. in Spanish offers an exciting combination of courses in language, culture, film, and literature, equipping students with the skills to communicate effectively in Spanish and gain a deeper understanding of the history and cultural practices of Spanish-speaking communities both in the US and abroad.

Students can choose from four cutting-edge  concentrations—Health and Human Service Professionals, Hispanic Studies, , Translation Studies, and Teacher Certification (7-12)—allowing them to tailor their studies to align with their personal and professional goals.

This program provides a culturally and lingustically rich foundation for students looking to engage meaningfully with Spanish-speaking communities while preparing them for various career paths.

Concentrations

Spanish 7-12, B.S.

The B.S. in Spanish with a concentration in Teacher Certification is designed for students interested in developing linguistic fluency and high levels of cultural proficiency in Spanish who want to become teachers of the language at the middle and/or high school level. All Spanish classes develop students' ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend Spanish while increasing their understanding of Spanish film, literature, history, geography, and culture. Concurrently, students will fulfill the courses associated with earning certification through the College of Education and will do one semester of student teaching. Students will:

  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and listening in Spanish.
  • Understand the history, geography, literature, and cultural practices of Spanish-speaking communities.
  • Collaborate effectively with educators, parents, and community stakeholders to promote the significance of Spanish language education and cultural appreciation

Spanish, B.S. - Health and Human Service Professionals

The concentration in Health and Human Service Professionals allows students to blend their interest in healthcare fields with Spanish language skills and a deep understanding of Hispanic and Latino/a/x cultures. Ideal for students eager to serve Spanish-speaking communities, this program prepares students to communicate effectively and provide culturally responsive services. Students will:

  • Gain fluency in essential Spanish terminology used across health and human service settings
  • Apply their language skills with Spanish-speaking individuals and communities
  • Navigate cultural nuances and connect meaningfully to Spanish-speaking individuals in both professional and community-based environments.

Spanish, B.S. - Hispanic Studies

The concentration in Hispanic Studies is designed for students interested in exploring the languages and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Students will:

  • learn about historic and contemporary Latinx and Hispanic issues
  • read and analyze literary texts and cultural products from the Latinx and Hispanic world
  • perfect their communication skills in Spanish

Spanish, B.S. - Translation Studies

The concentration in Translation Studies is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the field of English/Spanish translation. In completing this major, students will:

  • become skilled in translation theory and practice
  • improve their cultural and linguistic sensitivity and understanding
  • perfect their communication skills in Spanish and English
  • complete a major translation project under the instruction of a faculty member
