As an Art History major, you will study how art reflects the cultural, social, and political movements of its time. By gaining a deep understanding of the visual arts, you will be equipped with a critical eye and the skills to analyze and interpret the world around you. Learn about the history of art and the complexities of its existence over time and across cultures. Immerse yourself in the theory and traditions of art.

Southern is the only campus in the CSU system offering an Art History major. Students can immerse themselves in the theory and traditions of art, to begin preparing for careers with museums or art galleries, or in the fields of art appraisal or art conservation.

Learning Outcomes

Students will demonstrate:

  • General familiarity with the monuments and characteristics of major art periods of the past and present;
  • Deep understanding of a variety of cultures and/or periods in the history of art;
  • Some acquaintance with art theory and criticism;
  • An understanding of the tools and techniques of art-historical scholarship;
  • Familiarity with various methods of art-historical analysis;
  • Familiarity with various processes of making art;
  • Familiarity with the specialized operational procedures encountered in and employment opportunities offered by museums of art;
  • The ability to think, speak, and write clearly and effectively about works of art and art history;
  • The ability to conduct research on art using the tools of the art historian.

With Art History, students are prepared for careers with museums or art galleries, or in the fields of art appraisal or conservation.
