The Minor in Women’s Leadership is an interdisciplinary program that explores issues related to women obtaining and holding leadership positions. Students will have opportunities to develop their leadership potential through both theoretical and experiential coursework, including a selection of relevant offerings in social psychology, sociology, gender studies, and management.
Over the past century, women have made tremendous strides in shaping their destinies. Today, women are represented across all sectors of society and at every organizational level, taking on significant leadership roles. Historically, however, women have had less access to leadership positions than men—first due to rigid barriers and later because of the proverbial “glass ceiling.” This history continues to influence organizational life and women’s experiences in particular.
This minor examines the personal, social, and structural dynamics that affect women and men differently as leaders, focusing on how women are perceived, how their contributions are evaluated, and what opportunities are available to them. Open to students across SCSU, the program is designed for those interested in gaining the skills to become effective leaders. It also provides non-business students the chance to take leadership and management courses to develop the competencies needed for success in leadership roles. The minor offers maximum flexibility in elective choices, allowing credit sharing with courses available in the Liberal Education Program (LEP).
An undergraduate student who minors in Women’s Leadership gains skills in communication, advocacy, and organizational change, preparing them for leadership roles across industries. Graduates may pursue careers as program coordinators, community outreach specialists, diversity and inclusion associates, or nonprofit project managers. This minor strengthens a student’s ability to lead with equity, navigate workplace dynamics, and champion inclusive practices. Paired with majors in business, political science, sociology, or communications, it provides a strong foundation for careers emphasizing ethical leadership and social impact.
