Master of Social Work and Master of Arts in Women's and Gender Studies (MSW/MA) is a 72-credit dual-degree program that may be completed in three years.
MSW/MA students integrate research and theory from Women’s and Gender Studies with their professional social work education. MSW/MA students complete requirements for the MSW—Clinical Practice degree or the MSW—Community Practice: Community Organization, Policy, and Leadership degree. Academic courses, field practice experiences, and mentoring relationships afford interdisciplinary opportunities for scholarly inquiry, critical problem solving, and leadership development.
Supported by faculty advisors from both the MSW and the Women's and Gender Studies programs, MSW/MA students are responsible for meeting the academic, professional, and field practice standards of both the MSW and the MA programs. The curriculum includes two years of internship (950 hours, or about 14 to 18 hours per week) beginning in the second year of the program, as well as interdisciplinary capstone research. Internships are done during normal business hours. Evening and/or weekend placements are generally not available.
Applications are accepted from July 1 through December 15 for admission the following academic year. All application materials must be received by December 31.
MSW/MA graduates are qualified for professional social work positions in public and private agencies at the local, state, and national levels, and for applying for the State of Connecticut LMSW Licensure Examination shortly after graduation.
The MSW program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
