Pre-Columbian Ceramic Art from the Permanent Collection

A selection from Southern Connecticut State University’s permanent collection of Pre-Columbian ceramic art is on view in the Buley Art Gallery through December 7, 2023. On exhibition is a rich and complex survey of artifacts from the regions of modern-day Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Peru. These objects span in time from the early Chavin civilization in Peru dating as far back as 900 B.C., to the Nicoya civilization in Costa Rica, dating to around 1500 A.D. Known for their proficiency in the ceramic arts, these civilizations created elaborately decorated vessels and sculptural forms that were utilitarian, ceremonial, and religious and served as visual histories.
