History of the SWLE Center

Mission

The Social Work & Law Enforcement (SWLE) Center for Police Social Work is dedicated to advancing the ethical and effective integration of social work services into law enforcement agencies by preparing social workers, social work students, and law enforcement professionals to collaborate within the developing field of Police Social Work.

Historic Dates of Events

December 2025

Connecticut State Colleges and University System's Board of Regents approves the SWLE Center for Police Social Work.

June 2025

The SWLE Project receives state funding from the Connecticut Legislature to expand into a center at Southern Connecticut State University.

May 2024

SWLE hosted the third National Police Social Work Conference

2023

The SWLE Project becomes the new home of the National Conference on Police Social Work

April 2022

SWLE Project receives national recognition from the US Secretary of Education, Dr. Migual Cardona

October 2021

SWLE co-founders attended and presented at the first National Conference on Police Social Work in Bloomington, Indiana

September 2021

SWLE Project hosted the first Police Social Work Academy

March 2021

SWLE presents to the Connecticut Police Accountability Task Force with the National Association of Social Workers - Connecticut (NASW-CT)

Creation of the SWLE Project Integrative Police Social Work Practice Model

Dr. Issbel Logan and Retired Lt. Mathew Solak embedded two social work interns in the Willimantic Police Department as a pilot to conduct a feasibility study.

CT Police Accountability Act - HB 6004 was passed, requiring police to conduct a feasibility study on working with social workers
