How to Apply for VA Education Benefit

How to read this guide: Each step is labeled Required | Conditional. Complete all required steps. Conditional steps only apply if your VA counselor lets you know they are required for your process.

Step 1: Apply at Southern Required

Apply for admission to Southern Connecticut State University. Visit Tuition Waiver / Assistance for information about free applications.

Apply for Undergraduate    Apply for Graduate

Step 2: Apply for VA Benefits Required

Apply for your VA education benefit through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. 

Step 3: Enrollment Required

Enroll in classes by attending Southern events for transfer students.

Step 4: Receive your COE Required

Receive your Certificate of Eligibility (COE).

Step 5: Submit your VA Documents to Southern Required

Submit the following to Veteran, Military, and Adult Learner Services via the Veteran Benefit Application

• Certificate of Eligibility
• DD Form 214 (if applicable)
• Military orders (when applicable)
• Tuition Assistance authorization (if applicable)
• Any additional requested documentation

Step 6: Update Enrollment Each Term Required

VA Enrollment Certification Request is put into the enrollment management system for each semester or term you enroll in classes and complete the Veteran Benefit Application

Step 7: Monitor for Communication Required

Monitor your text messages and email for correspondence from the VA.  You must verify your enrollment with the VA each month to receive your payments.
