Physical Education/Teacher Certification Program
SCSU has been recognized as a leader in teacher preparation since it began as a Teacher’s
College in 1893. The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program is a unique
and dynamic curriculum for prospective PK-12 Physical Education teachers. This program
is designed to prepare students to teach Physical Education in PK-12 school settings,
and successful completion of the 120-credit degree program fulfills the academic requirements
of the Connecticut Initial Educator Certificate for PK-12 Physical Education, as well
as eligibility for physical education teacher certification in most other states (the
PRAXIS II exam is also required for certification).
Students in this program will be guided through a sequential PETE curriculum by experienced, knowledegable and dynamic faculty who will provide them with the pedagogical knowledge and skills necessary to be an effective PK-12 physical educator. The PETE curriculum teaches students developmentally appropriate educational movement activities in the areas of physical fitness activities, games and sports, dance and rhythmic activities, aquatics, individual-performance activities, and outdoor pursuits. This program will allow students to learn and develop effective teaching skills and strategies to successfully meet the needs of diverse learners within the psychomotor, cognitive and affective domains in physical education.
This unique program includes multiple, progressive opportunities to gain real-life field experiences with PETE program faculty and certified physical education teachers in elementary and secondary school settings. The program culminates with full time student teaching experiences within elementary (8 weeks) and secondary (8 weeks) school settings. Course instruction is provided by energetic and caring faculty who have a sincere interest in each student’s development.
The SCSU Physical Education Teacher Education program is nationally recognized and accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Society of Health and Physical Education (SHAPE) America.
