Three graduate students receiving awards

The Counselor Education Department (CED) houses two distinct specialty areas, School Counseling and Counselor Education and Supervision. Each of our graduate programs (School Counseling: Master’s and Advanced Certificates, Counselor Education: Doctorate) prepares students to enter their respective professions with the necessary knowledge, skills, and field experience to transition seamlessly to their professional roles.

The Counselor Education Department is intentionally student-centered. We offer courses in on-ground, hybrid, and fully online formats. When classes are held on campus, they are conveniently scheduled in the evenings to accommodate the demanding lives of our student population.

Department Mission

The mission of the Counselor Education Department is to prepare School Counselors, Counselor Educators, and Counseling Supervisors who contribute significantly to the life-long development and well-being of children, youth, adults, and families in a multicultural society. We incorporate nationally accredited curriculum standards, best practices, a social justice advocacy framework, and active clinical and field practice in our programs. We are committed to providing high-quality, accessible, and inclusive programs to support socially and culturally diverse candidates that reflect the communities in which they will serve.

Commitment to Diversity

The Counselor Education Department at SCSU is committed to maintaining a community that recognizes and values the inherent worth and dignity of every person, which fosters sensitivity, understanding, and mutual respect among its members, and encourages all individuals to reach their full potential. In pursuit of its goal of academic excellence, the department seeks to recruit, retain, and nurture a diverse student body, believing that diverse representation stimulates creativity, promotes the exchange of ideas, enriches campus life, and strengthens programs as well as the profession. The Counselor Education Department prohibits discrimination against any person on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, marital status, parental status, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability status, health status, or veteran status.
